Guido van Rossum b7b030ec37 Disable dup() of SSLSocket. I don't think it can be made to work. 2007-11-16 01:28:45 +00:00
Guido van Rossum 39eb8fa0db This is roughly socket2.diff from issue 1378, with a few changes applied
to ssl.py (no need to test whether we can dup any more).
Regular sockets no longer have a _base, but we still have explicit
reference counting of socket objects for the benefit of makefile();
using duplicate sockets won't work for SSLSocket.

  Merge from py3k branch:
  Correction for issue1265 (pdb bug with "with" statement).

  When an unfinished generator-iterator is garbage collected, PyEval_EvalFrameEx
  is called with a GeneratorExit exception set. This leads to funny results
  if the sys.settrace function itself makes use of generators.
  A visible effect is that the settrace function is reset to None.
  Another is that the eventual "finally" block of the generator is not called.

  It is necessary to save/restore the exception around the call to the trace
  function.

  This happens a lot with py3k: isinstance() of an ABCMeta instance runs
      def __instancecheck__(cls, instance):
          """Override for isinstance(instance, cls)."""
          return any(cls.__subclasscheck__(c)
                     for c in {instance.__class__, type(instance)})
  which lets an opened generator expression each time it returns True.

  Backport candidate, even if the case is less frequent in 2.5.

  A patch from issue 1378 by roudkerk:

  Currently on Windows set_error() make use of a large array which maps
  socket error numbers to error messages.

  This patch removes that array and just lets PyErr_SetExcFromWindowsErr()
  generate the message by using the Win32 function FormatMessage().

Guido van Rossum 98297ee781 Merging the py3k-pep3137 branch back into the py3k branch.
No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137
branch.  The most obvious changes:

  - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level);
  - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level);
  - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible.

I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type.

The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more
bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list.

  tuple.__repr__ did not consider a reference loop as it is not possible from
  Python code; but it is possible from C. object.__str__ had the issue of not
  expecting a type to doing something within it's tp_str implementation that

  Issue #1580738. When HTTPConnection reads the whole stream with read(),
  it closes itself. When the stream is read in several calls to read(n),
  it should behave in the same way if HTTPConnection knows where the end
  of the stream is (through self.length). Added a test case for this
  behaviour.

Guido van Rossum 97f9d4f312 Patch #1318 by Amaury Forgeot d'Arc.
Updates to ctypes for python 3.0 to make the tests pass.
Notable changes are:
- return bytes instead of str8
- integers in range(256) are accepted as "one char string":
  libc.strchr("abcdef", 98) is now valid.
- directly use the wide-char version of the win32 function LoadLibrary.

Brett Cannon 4043001f5d Make str/str8 comparisons return True/False for !=/==.
Code that has been returning str8 becomes much more apparent thanks to this
(e.g., struct module returning str8 for all string-related formats or sqlite3
passing in str8 instances when converting objects that had a __conform__
method). One also has to watch out in C code when making a key from char *
using PyString in the C code but a str instance in Python code as that will not
longer compare equal.

Once str8 gains a constructor like the current bytes type then
test_modulefinder needs a cleanup as the fix is a little messy in that file.

Thanks goes to Thomas Lee for writing the patch for the change giving an
initial run-down of why most of the tests were failing.

Barry Warsaw bef9d21d14 Make test_email.py completely pass. This is cheating though because the two
line splitting examples don't split things the way they used to -- or should.
In these cases, change the test case and add an XXX.

The final failure was in Charset.body_encode() with euc-jp charset. These
return the original string unencoded, which isn't right. XXX and comment this
out for now; we'll fix it after a1.

Fix a couple of tests since .body_encode()'s arguments have changed. Also, I
think body_encode() should take a string not a byte array for consistency with
the rest of the api (but I'm not positive about this). In
quoprimime.body_encode(), body_check() must be passed an int.

Guido van Rossum fb67be2f6b Three patches from issue #1047, by Amaury Forgeot d'Arc:
1/ getargs.diff adds the 'Z' and 'Z#' format specifiers for
PyArg_ParseTuple. They mimic z and z# for unicode strings, by accepting
a Unicode or None (in which case the Py_UNICODE* pointer is set to
NULL). With doc and tests.

2/ subprocess.diff converts file PC/_subprocess.c to unicode. We use the
Unicode version of the win32 api (and Z conversion from previous patch)

3/ stdout.diff: sys.stdout must not convert the line endings, Windows
already does it.
Without this patch, when redirecting the output of python, the file
contains \r\r\n for each line. (test_subprocess did catch this)

However, I (GvR) removed the change to _fileio.c (included in the
patches) that prevents closing file descripors < 3 from being closed;
I think that needs to be solved in a different way.

Eric Smith 625cbf28ee Modified parsing of format strings, so that we always return
a tuple (literal, field_name, format_spec, conversion).

literal will always be a string, but might be of zero length.
field_name will be None if there is no markup text
format_spec will be a (possibly zero length) string if
  field_name is non-None
conversion will be a one character string, or None

This makes the Formatter class, and especially it's parse()
method, easier to understand.

Suggestion was by Jim Jewett, inspired by the "tail" of an
elementtree node.

Also, fixed a reference leak in fieldnameiter_next.

  Here's a patch which addresses this. It also fixes the indentation in
  PySSL_SetError, bringing it into line with PEP 7, fixes a compile warning
  about one of the OpenSSL macros, and makes the namespace a bit more
  consistent. I've tested it on FC 7 and OS X 10.4.

  Improve extended slicing support in builtin types and classes. Specifically:

   - Specialcase extended slices that amount to a shallow copy the same way as
     is done for simple slices, in the tuple, string and unicode case.

   - Specialcase step-1 extended slices to optimize the common case for all
     involved types.

   - For lists, allow extended slice assignment of differing lengths as long
     as the step is 1. (Previously, 'l[:2:1] = []' failed even though
     'l[:2] = []' and 'l[:2:None] = []' do not.)

   - Implement extended slicing for buffer, array, structseq, mmap and
     UserString.UserString.

   - Implement slice-object support (but not non-step-1 slice assignment) for
     UserString.MutableString.

   - Add tests for all new functionality.

Eric Smith 8c66326368 Implementation of PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting.
Known issues:

The string.Formatter class, as discussed in the PEP, is incomplete.

Error handling needs to conform to the PEP.

Need to fix this warning that I introduced in Python/formatter_unicode.c:
Objects/stringlib/unicodedefs.h:26: warning: `STRINGLIB_CMP' defined but not used

Need to make sure sign formatting is correct, more tests needed.

Need to remove '()' sign formatting, left over from an earlier version of the PEP.

Guido van Rossum 34d1928766 SF patch# 1770008 by Christian Heimes (plus some extras).
Completely get rid of StringIO.py and cStringIO.c.

I had to fix a few tests and modules beyond what Christian did, and
invent a few conventions. E.g. in elementtree, I chose to
write/return Unicode strings whe no encoding is given, but bytes when
an explicit encoding is given. Also mimetools was made to always
assume binary files.

Thomas Heller 2fb5ac745b Fix the ctypes tests. Patch from Victor Stinner. He writes:
The problem is that ctypes c_char (and c_char_p) creates unicode string
instead of byte string. I attached a proposition (patch) to change this
behaviour (use bytes for c_char).

So in next example, it will display 'bytes' and not 'str':
  from ctypes import c_buffer, c_char
  buf = c_buffer("abcdef")
  print (type(buf[0]))

Other behaviour changes:
 - repr(c_char) adds a "b"
   eg. repr(c_char('x')) is "c_char(b'x')" instead of "c_char('x')"
 - bytes is mutable whereas str is not:
   this may break some modules based on ctypes

Jeremy Hylton 77553ab531 Fix test for new version of urllib that uses HTTPConnection directly.
Changes the way the httplib classes are stubbed out.
2007-08-04 19:23:09 +00:00
Jeremy Hylton 39b198d835 Change urllib to use HTTPConnection rather than old HTTP class.
The HTTP class is a backwards compatibility layer for the Python 1.5
API. (The only remaining use in the std library is xmlrpclib.)

The current change makes urllib issue HTTP/1.0 requests with
HTTPConnection, because is accesses HTTPResponse.fp directly instead
of using the read() method. Using fp directly interacts poorly with
persistent connections. There are probably better solutions than the
current one, but this is a start.

2007-08-04 03:25:17 +00:00
Jeremy Hylton 97043c3c02 HTTPResponse should not inherit from io.IOBase.
I'm not sure why I thought it should originally, but it introduces an
__del__() method on the response which cause the close() to be called
too soon using the HTTP compat class.

Also, remove some stale comments. The HTTPResponse calls makefile()
immediately, so there is no risk of it closing the socket.

Jeremy Hylton 5accbdb812 Make sure socket.close() doesn't interfere with socket.makefile().
If a makefile()-generated object is open and its parent socket is
closed, the parent socket should remain open until the child is
closed, too. The code to support this is moderately complex and
requires one extra slots in the socket object.

This change fixes httplib so that several urllib2net test cases pass
again.

Add SocketCloser class to socket.py, which encapsulates the
refcounting logic for sockets after makefile() has been called.

Move SocketIO class from io module to socket module. It's only use is
to implement the raw I/O methods on top of a socket to support
makefile().

Add unittests to test_socket to cover various patterns of close and
makefile.
