generator to drop stuff like </para>. Note that it needs to
be possible for the closing tag to *always* be omitted for it
to be included in "autoclose".
main(): Added command-line option "-a" / "--autoclose" to set the
list of general identifiers passed to the convert() function
as the "autoclose" parameter. The list may only be specified
once (not additive) and GIs should be comma-separated. The
default list includes only "para".

Reduce the <args> element so that <optional> goes away; just use
square brackets to indicate what's optional. This makes it easier to
read than the LaTeX, and the processor can do any checking it needs to
in order to make sure it's legit. Possible shortcoming: DSSSL
processors may need more explicit markup. Can probably hack around it
for this case, but we'll see.

Here is my current version of xmllib.py and the documentation. This
version has some API changes with respect to the version currently in
Python (also the one in 1.5.2a).
This version supports XML namespaces.

Minor nit that fixes a bunch of indexing: the way the classdesc

environment saves the name of the last class described, method and
member descriptions were not picking it up correctly. Thus, many
index entries were described as "( method)" instead of "(FooClass
method)". Multiple entries were collapsed in the index when
methods/members from multiple classes share the same name.

that this section in the tutorial may have been (in part) the source

Added --iconserver option to set the $ICONSERVER variable in latex2html; this

Lots of new stuff for "module synopsis support." Public interface consists

of three macros, one which replaces some of the current conventions used in
the module sections:
\declaremodule: Requires two parameters: module type (standard, builtin,
extension), and the module name. An optional parameter should be
given as the basis for the module's "key" used for linking to or
referencing the section. The "key" should only be given if the
module's name contains underscores, and should be the name with the
underscore's stripped. This should be the first thing after the
\section used to introduce the module.
\modulesynopsis: Requires a single parameter: a short, one-liner
description of the module that can be used as part of the chapter
introduction. This should probably be placed just after the
\declaremodule, but may be placed anywhere in the same section.
\localmoduletable: No parameters. If a .syn file exists for the current
chapter (or for the entire document in howto docs), a synopsistable
is created with the contents loaded from the .syn file.
Some re-organization due to module synopsis support.
Some \def's changed to \newcommand's.

a) in the list of keywords (section 2.3.1) 'exec' is missing

Added some new cruft.
For some of the "big" targets, force things to happen in the "right"
subdirectory, i.e., "make" will build the DVI and PostScript files in the
paper-letter/ directory, and "make PAPER=a4" will build DVI and PostScript
files in the paper-a4/ directory.
Probably still needs some restructuring.

edit files.
Anyone who downloads the source package can also simply edit this file,

special markup for the first column of a table using {tableii} or {tableiii}.
In LaTeX, this requires using "textrm" as the formatting function, and this
is needed to remove the bogus "<textrm>" that gets generated otherwise.
There should probably be a more general mapping of specified markup to useful
markup, but that doesn't appear needed at the moment.
do_env_tableii(), do_env_tableiii(): If the markup for the first column is
\textrm, make it empty.
do_cmd_lineii(), do_cmd_lineiii(): If the markup for the first column is
empty, don't add markup around the text.

Run pdflatex twice to generate the PDF files, even though LaTeX has already
been run a couple of times. This ensures that font metrics for the final
run match those for the first run, and seesm to get (somewhat) better

This allows indexing functions from other modules/class/whatnot
without being dependent on the exact expansions of several macros
internal to python.sty. It's also easier to read in the source!
Some new "logical" macros that seem to be useful:
\regexp{}: For regular expressions. To make it easier to keep the appearance
consistent.
\mimetype{}: Don't use \code{}!
\envvar{}: Environment variable. This does some indexing as well.
\character{}: Just a character we want to talk about in the text, but not
a Python constant.

There are a lot of things relating to indexing that are commented out;
parts need to be examined and dealt with with respect to changes in
LaTeX2HTML internals. I'll work with Ross to see what it takes to make
this sort of stuff reasonable.

Have the {verbatim} environment get the samples indented a bit; this
appearantly had been attempted in the old code, but didn't work because
paragraphs weren't indented.
Make all headers, from chapters on down to subparagraphs, have sans-serif
titles.
\setindexsubitem{}: New macro. Replaces \renewcommand{\indexsubitem{}(...)}
everywhere. This allows LaTeX2HTML to be made to work correctly for
this. That was near impossible with the old mechanisms.
For all {*desc} environments, make the name of the described thing bold as
well as monospaced.
{opcodedesc} environment: Don't index the byte code names; that doesn't seem
terribly useful, and there are a lot of them.
\var{}: More magic to make sure that the size is right even if embedded in
\file{} or some other macro that uses the sans-serif font in running
text.
\bfcode{}: New macro. Makes the font \code{} and bold. (Was unreasonable
using old LaTeX 2.09.)
\file{}: Adjust the size of the sans-serif font a little.
\email{}, \url{}, Make these use the same font as \file{}, but not the
surrounding single-quotes.
Update many comments.
Lots of minor nits and a little cleanliness.

the <, >, and | characters, or at least had them at the wrong locations. It
also allowed confusion between upper-case I and lower-case L.)

The biggie: changed the funcdesc environments used for opcode descriptions

to use the opcodedesc environment.
Changed a \code{} to a \file{} near the start where a file is referenced.
Fixed a typo: "on" --> "one" in ROT_THREE description.
Wherever opcodes were referenced by name, use \code{OPCODE_NAME}; usage was
inconsistent. Ideally, another macro would be defined since these don't
represent code a programmer would type, but that's minor even for me. It'll
probably get converted automatically in the SGML conversion project. Whether
that matters or not isn't relevant at this point.

I'm not sure this is really an optimal solution yet, but it may be the best
alternative. It avoids describing the instructions as either data items or
functions.
This change was discussed with Guido. (Guido: Take a look at the LaTeX
output for this; if this is reasonable I'll go ahead and update the perl
code in myformat.perl to match.)

since that's now the recommended way to do it.
In pickling discussion, change "code{pickle}" (not missing leading "\") to
"This" since the immediately preceeding sentence ended with the same text
(with the proper "\"). Fixes a formatting bug and an odd glitch in the
writing.
