Mark Dickinson d3ca557150 Issue #5864: Fix problem with empty code formatting for floats,
where a bogus trailing zero could be added.
2009-04-29 18:47:07 +00:00
Mark Dickinson e6a076d86c Issue #1869 (and 4707, 5118, 5473, 1456775): use the new
string <-> float conversion routines to make round(x, n) correctly
rounded for floats x, so that it always agrees with format(x, '.<n>f').

Also fix some other round nuisances, like round(123.456, 1-2**31) giving
an integer rather than a float.

Mark Dickinson 7efad9ec5a Sort out some confusion in test_float.py: the two
separate FormatTestCase classes have been combined,
and test_short_repr has been moved from FormatTestCase
to the existing ReprTestCase.

Eric Smith 0923d1d8d7 The other half of Issue #1580: use short float repr where possible.
Addresses the float -> string conversion, using David Gay's code which
was added in Mark Dickinson's checkin r71663.

Also addresses these, which are intertwined with the short repr
changes:

- Issue #5772: format(1e100, '<') produces '1e+100', not '1.0e+100'
- Issue #5515: 'n' formatting with commas no longer works poorly
    with leading zeros.
- PEP 378 Format Specifier for Thousands Separator: implemented
    for floats.

This should fix issue2632. A long description of the two competing
problems is in the bug report (one old, one recently introduced trying
to fix the old one). In short:

buffer data during socket._fileobject.read() and readlines() within a
cStringIO object instead of a [] of str()s returned from the recv()
  call.

This prevents excessive memory use due to the size parameter being
passed to recv() being grossly larger than the actual size of the data
returned *and* prevents excessive cpu usage due to looping in python
calling recv() with a very tiny size value if min() is used as the
  previous memory-use bug "fix" did.

It also documents what the socket._fileobject._rbufsize member is
  actually used for.

This is a candidate for back porting to 2.5.

Speed-up dictionary constructor by about 10%.

New opcode, STORE_MAP saves the compiler from awkward stack manipulations
and specializes for dicts using PyDict_SetItem instead of PyObject_SetItem.

  Old disassembly:
                0 BUILD_MAP 0
                3 DUP_TOP

Give meaning to the oparg for BUILD_MAP: estimated size of the dictionary.

Allows dictionaries to be pre-sized (upto 255 elements) saving time lost
to re-sizes with their attendant mallocs and re-insertions.

Has zero effect on small dictionaries (5 elements or fewer), a slight
benefit for dicts upto 22 elements (because they had to resize once
anyway), and more benefit for dicts upto 255 elements (saving multiple
resizes during the build-up and reducing the number of collisions on
the first insertions). Beyond 255 elements, there is no addional benefit.

Christian Heimes 827b35c9fe Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.
Thanks to noam for the patch! I had to modify doubledigits.c slightly to support X64 and IA64 machines on Windows. I also added the new file to the three project files.

Guido van Rossum 254348e201 Rename buffer -> bytearray. 2007-11-21 19:29:53 +00:00
Guido van Rossum 98297ee781 Merging the py3k-pep3137 branch back into the py3k branch.
No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137
branch. The most obvious changes:

  - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level);
  - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level);
  - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible.

I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type.

The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more
bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list.

Eric Smith 11fe3e05ff Fixed test name. 2007-08-31 01:33:06 +00:00
Eric Smith 8c66326368 Implementation of PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting.
Known issues:

The string.Formatter class, as discussed in the PEP, is incomplete.

Error handling needs to conform to the PEP.

Need to fix this warning that I introduced in Python/formatter_unicode.c:
Objects/stringlib/unicodedefs.h:26: warning: `STRINGLIB_CMP' defined but not used

Need to make sure sign formatting is correct, more tests needed.

Need to remove '()' sign formatting, left over from an earlier version of the PEP.

Michael W. Hudson ba283e2b7f This is my patch:
[ 1181301 ] make float packing copy bytes when they can

which hasn't been reviewed, despite numerous threats to check it in
anyway if noone reviews it. Please read the diff on the checkin list,
at least!

The basic idea is to examine the bytes of some 'probe values' to see if
the current platform is a IEEE 754-ish platform, and if so
_PyFloat_{Pack,Unpack}{4,8} just copy bytes around.

The rest is hair for testing, and tests.
