Drop SDK version configuration for Tk compilation, to not bind it to W2k
anymore. Binding it to XP would conflict with Tk's own binding of tkMenu to W2k.
As stated in PEP 11, 3.4 removes code on Windows platforms where
COMSPEC points to command.com. The w9xpopen project in Visual Studio
was added to support that case, and there was a special case in subprocess
to cover that situation. This change removes the w9xpopen project from
the Visual Studio solution and removes any references to the w9xpopen
executable.

summary: Changes to allow Profile Guided Optimization builds to succeed on VS2010
and lifetime issues of dynamically allocated Py_buffer members (#9990)
as well as crashes (#8305, #7433). Many new features have been added
(See whatsnew/3.3), and the documentation has been updated extensively.
The ndarray test object from _testbuffer.c implements all aspects of
PEP-3118, so further development towards the complete implementation
of the PEP can proceed in a test-driven manner.
Thanks to Nick Coghlan, Antoine Pitrou and Pauli Virtanen for review
and many ideas.
- Issue #12834: Fix incorrect results of memoryview.tobytes() for
non-contiguous arrays.
- Issue #5231: Introduce memoryview.cast() method that allows changing
format and shape without making a copy of the underlying memory.

The environment variable PYTHONHASHSEED and the new command line flag -R control this
behavior.

When the solution is converted to Visual Studio 2010, the command line to invoke make_buildinfo changes from:
$(SolutionDir)make_buildinfo.exe" Debug "$(IntDir)\"
to
$(SolutionDir)make_buildinfo.exe" Debug "$(IntDir)"
If the final backslash is omitted, the backslash in IntDir will escape the quote, thus passing the quote in as part of the path name.
This solution is a hack-fix to that problem by skipping any trailing quote from the path name. It works as long as we don't need any additional arguments to make_buildinfo.exe. This will help all those sould that are going to run this project through the visual studio autoconverter and get the same error.
make_buildinfo regression with unquoted path
Make_buildinfo.exe should be called with a quoted path, and should quote the full paths to its temp files, to support spaces in filenames.

http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/ThreadSanitizer is a dynamic data
race detector that runs on top of valgrind. With this patch, the binaries at
http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/ThreadSanitizer#Binaries pass many
but not all of the Python tests. All of regrtest still passes outside of tsan.
I've implemented part of the C1x atomic types so that we can explicitly mark
variables that are used across threads, and get defined behavior as compilers
advance.
I've added tsan's client header and implementation to the codebase in
dynamic_annotations.{h,c} (docs at
http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/DynamicAnnotations).
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get helgrind and drd to give sensible
error messages, even when I use their client annotations, so I'm not supporting
them.

- incorporate and adapt David Gay's dtoa and strtod
into the Python core
- on platforms where we can use Gay's code (almost
all!), repr(float) is based on the shortest
sequence of decimal digits that rounds correctly.
- add sys.float_repr_style attribute to indicate
whether we're using Gay's code or not
- add autoconf magic to detect and enable SSE2
instructions on x86/gcc
- slight change to repr and str: repr switches
to exponential notation at 1e16 instead of
1e17, str switches at 1e11 instead of 1e12
The main io module now uses the C implementation. The Python one still exists
in Lib/_pyio.py for ease of testing new features and usefulness to other
implementers.
The rewrite was done by Antoine Pitrou and Amaury Forgeot d'Arc. I was slightly
helpful at the end. :)

The patch also adds acosh, asinh, atanh, log1p and copysign to all platforms. Finally it fixes differences between platforms like different results or exceptions for edge cases. Have fun :)

Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C. This allows for usage of the
'warnings' code in places where it was previously not possible (e.g., the
parser). It could also potentially lead to a speed-up in interpreter start-up
if the C version of the code (_warnings) is imported over the use of the
Python version in key places.
Closes issue #1631171.

Issue 2408: remove the _types module
It was only used as a helper in types.py to access types (GetSetDescriptorType and MemberDescriptorType),

These expressions even work with Jython.
I don't know what the future of the types module is; (cf. discussion in http://bugs.python.org/issue1605 )
at least this change makes it simpler.

- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
run in parallel without issue.

Reimplement kill_python. The existing version had a number of flaws, namely, it didn't work for x64 and it wasn't precise about which python_d.exe it was killing -- it just killed the first one it came across that happened to have 'pcbuild\python_d.exe' or 'build\python_d.exe' in it's path. The new version has been rewritten from the ground up and now lives in PCbuild, instead of Tools\buildbot, and it has also been incorporated into the Visual Studio solution (pcbuild.sln) as 'kill_python'. The solution has also been altered such that kill_python is called where necessary in the build process in order to prevent any linking errors due to open file locks. In lieu of this, all of the existing bits and pieces in Tools\buildbot that called out to kill_python at various points have also been removed as they are now obsolete. Tested on both Win32 and x64.
Change set (included to improve usefulness of svnmerge log entry):
