"make profile-opt" no longer replaces CFLAGS_NODIST with CFLAGS. It
now adds profile-guided optimization (PGO) flags to CFLAGS_NODIST,
existing CFLAGS_NODIST flags are kept.
Move tupleobject.h code surrounded by "#ifndef Py_LIMITED_API"
to a new Include/cpython/tupleobject.h header file.
Add cpython/ header files to Makefile.pre.in and pythoncore project
of PCbuild.
Include/*.h should be the "portable Python API", whereas
Include/cpython/*.h should be the "CPython API": CPython
implementation details.
Changes:
* Create Include/cpython/ subdirectory
* "make install" now creates $prefix/include/cpython and copy
Include/cpython/* to $prefix/include/cpython
* Create Include/cpython/objimpl.h: move objimpl.h code
surrounded by "#ifndef Py_LIMITED_API" to cpython/objimpl.h.
* objimpl.h now includes cpython/objimpl.h
* Windows installer (MSI) now also install Include/ subdirectories:
Include/cpython/ and Include/internal/.
* And pycore_lifecycle.h and pycore_pathconfig.h headers to
Include/internal/
* Move Py_BUILD_CORE specific code from coreconfig.h and
pylifecycle.h to pycore_pathconfig.h and pycore_lifecycle.h
* Move _Py_wstrlist_XXX() definitions and _PyPathConfig code
from pycore_state.h to pycore_pathconfig.h
* Move "Init" and "Fini" function definitions from pylifecycle.c to
pycore_lifecycle.h.
The accu.h header is no longer part of the Python C API: it has been
moved to the "internal" headers which are restricted to Python
itself.
Replace #include "accu.h" with #include "pycore_accu.h".
* Modify object.h to ensure that pymem.h is included,
to get _Py_tracemalloc_config variable.
* Move _PyTraceMalloc_XXX() functions to tracemalloc.h,
they need PyObject type. Break circular dependency between pymem.h
and object.h.
* Add Include/coreconfig.h
* Move config_*() and _PyCoreConfig_*() functions from Modules/main.c
to a new Python/coreconfig.c file.
* Inline _Py_ReadHashSeed() into config_init_hash_seed()
* Move global configuration variables to coreconfig.c
bpo-32430: Rename Modules/Setup.dist to Modules/Setup
Remove the necessity to copy the former manually to the latter when updating the local source tree.
Setup modules are no longer built with -DPy_BUILD_CORE by default,
as using that flag may now require including additional internal-only header files.
Instead, only the modules that specifically need it use that setting.
* Document `from __future__ import annotations`
* Provide plumbing and tests for `from __future__ import annotations`
* Implement unparsing the AST back to string form
This is required for PEP 563 and as such only implements a part of the
unparsing process that covers expressions.
Add https://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf-archive/ax_check_openssl.html
to auto-detect compiler flags, linker flags and libraries to compile
OpenSSL extensions. The M4 macro uses pkg-config and falls back to
manual detection.
Add autoconf magic to detect usable X509_VERIFY_PARAM_set1_host()
and related functions.
Refactor setup.py to use new config vars to compile _ssl and _hashlib
modules.

* Factorize code from PC/getpathp.c and Modules/getpath.c to remove
duplicated code
* rename pathconfig_clear() to _PyPathConfig_Clear()
* Inline _PyPathConfig_Fini() in pymain_impl() and then remove it,
since it's a oneliner
bpo-32096, bpo-30860: Partially revert the commit
2ebc5ce42a8a9e047e790aefbf9a94811569b2b6:
* Move structures back from Include/internal/mem.h to
Objects/obmalloc.c
* Remove _PyObject_Initialize() and _PyMem_Initialize()
* Remove Include/internal/pymalloc.h
* Add test_capi.test_pre_initialization_api():
Make sure that it's possible to call Py_DecodeLocale(), and then call
Py_SetProgramName() with the decoded string, before Py_Initialize().
PyMem_RawMalloc() and Py_DecodeLocale() can be called again before
_PyRuntimeState_Init().

* bpo-28643: Record profile-opt build progress with stamp files
The profile-opt makefile target is expensive to build. Since the
makefile does not contain complete dependency information for this
target, much extra work can get done if the build is interrupted and
re-started. Even running "make" a second time will result in a huge
amount of redundant work.
As a minimal fix (rather than removing recursive "make" and adding a
proper dependency graph), split the profile-opt target into parts:
- ensure tree is clean (profile-clean-stamp)
- build with profile generation enabled (profile-gen-stamp)
- run task to generate profile information (profile-run-stamp)
- build optimized Python using above information (profile-opt)
We use "stamp" files to record completion of the steps. Running
"make clean" will not remove the profile-run-stamp file.
Other minor changes:
- remove the "build_all_use_profile" target. I don't expect callers
of the makefile to use this target so that should be safe.
- remove execution of "profile-removal" at end of "profile-opt". I
don't see any reason to not to keep the profile information, given
the cost to generate it. Removing the "profile-run-stamp" file
will force re-generation of it.
* Add Tools/scripts/smelly.py: script checking if all symbols
exported by libpython start with "Py" or "_Py".
* Modify "make smelly" to run smelly.py: the command now fails with a
non-zero exit code if libpython leaks a "smelly" symbol.
* Travis CI now runs "make smelly"
Allow configure --with-lto to apply to all builds, not just profile-opt builds.
Whether this is actually useful or not must be determined by the person
building CPython using their own toolchain.
My own quick test on x86_64 Debian 9 (gcc 6.3, binutils 2.28) seemed
to suggest that it wasn't, but I expect better toolchains can or will exist
at some point. The point is to allow it at all.

PEP 432 specifies a number of large changes to interpreter startup code, including exposing a cleaner C-API. The major changes depend on a number of smaller changes. This patch includes all those smaller changes.
* bpo-29243: Fix Makefile with respect to --enable-optimizations
When using the Profile Guided Optimization (./configure --enable-optimizations)
Python is built not only during `make` but rebuilt again during `make test`,
`make install` and others. This patch fixes the issue.
Note that this fix produces no change at all in the Makefile if configure is
run witout --enable-optimizations.
* !squash
Don't rebuild generated files based on file modification time
anymore, the action is now explicit. Replace "make touch"
with "make regen-all".
Changes:
* Remove "make touch", Tools/hg/hgtouch.py and .hgtouch
* Add a new "make regen-all" command to rebuild all generated files
* Add subcommands to only generate specific files:
- regen-ast: Include/Python-ast.h and Python/Python-ast.c
- regen-grammar: Include/graminit.h and Python/graminit.c
- regen-importlib: Python/importlib_external.h and Python/importlib.h
- regen-opcode: Include/opcode.h
- regen-opcode-targets: Python/opcode_targets.h
- regen-typeslots: Objects/typeslots.inc
* Rename PYTHON_FOR_GEN to PYTHON_FOR_REGEN
* pgen is now only built by by "make regen-grammar"
* Add $(srcdir)/ prefix to paths to source files to handle correctly
compilation outside the source directory
Note: $(PYTHON_FOR_REGEN) is no more used nor needed by "make"
default target building Python.
* Fix `make tags` warnings
`make tags` target tries to find C sources and headers in "Grammar" and
"Mac" folders and generates these warnings:
ctags: Warning: cannot open source file "Grammar/*.[ch]" : No such file or directory
ctags: Warning: cannot open source file "Mac/*.[ch]" : No such file or directory
This commit changes $SRCDIRS variable in configure.ac to remote these
directories. This variable is used only for tags generation.
Also, "configure" was regenerated with `autoreconf`.
* Fix `make tags` fail on non-default tag names
When ctags overrides default tags filename (e.g. `-f .tags`) `make tags`
is failed because it assumes to see default `tags` filename:
sort: cannot read: tags: No such file or directory
This commit explicitly specifies "tags" filename for tags generation.
sys.version and the platform module python_build(),
python_branch(), and python_revision() functions now use
git information rather than hg when building from a repo.
Based on original patches by Brett Cannon and Steve Dower.
* Move all functions to call objects in a new Objects/call.c file.
* Rename fast_function() to _PyFunction_FastCallKeywords().
* Copy null_error() from Objects/abstract.c
* Inline type_error() in call.c to not have to copy it, it was only
called once.
* Export _PyEval_EvalCodeWithName() since it is now called
from call.c.

Gnu Make treats comments in a list of commands as shell comments (not
makefile comments), and reports them as shell commands. The space separating
the @ and # symbols helps syntax highlighting.
It seems like at least 2 buildbots need more than 15 minutes per test file.
Example with "AMD64 Snow Leop 3.x":
10 slowest tests:
- test_tools: 14 min 40 sec
- test_tokenize: 11 min 57 sec
- test_datetime: 11 min 25 sec
- ...
Tested on macOS 10.11 dtrace, Ubuntu 16.04 SystemTap, and libbcc.
Largely based by an initial patch by Jesús Cea Avión, with some
influence from Dave Malcolm's SystemTap patch and Nikhil Benesch's
unification patch.
Things deliberately left out for simplicity:
- ustack helpers, I have no way of testing them at this point since
they are Solaris-specific
- PyFrameObject * in function__entry/function__return, this is
SystemTap-specific
- SPARC support
- dynamic tracing
- sys module dtrace facility introspection
All of those might be added later.
test_tools is pretty much useless unless somebody copies the scripts
it tests into the proper location, but we might as well install it
anyway to make sure it skips properly. test_warnings just didn't get
included when it was turned into a package in 94966dfd3bd3.

The whole test suite takes 6 minutes on my laptop. It takes less than 30
minutes on most buildbots. The TESTTIMEOUT is the timeout for a single test

$LDVERSION, which screws up the sym/hard-links. This avoids those games when
$VERSION == $LDVERSION.
Also, include a drive-by fix for an obvious syntax error.
Both the Makefile and the script that is used on OSX to create the binary
installer refer to the directory containing the Makefile using the name
'config'. This name was changed with the new ABI (with default build flags
it is now named config-3.2m). This patch ensures that both files use the
correct name.
The build-installer.py script contains one other change: it now tests for the
Tcl/Tk framework version by looking at the 'Current' symlink in the framework
instead of runnning a script. This makes it possible to verify the version
that is in the SDK that's used during the build instead of the version that
is installed on the system.

configure to append to Python's default values for those variables, and
similarly allow users to set $XXFLAGS on the make command line to append to the
values set by configure.
In the makefile, this renames the variables that used to be $XXFLAGS to
$PY_XXFLAGS, and renames the old $PY_CFLAGS to $PY_CORE_CFLAGS. To compensate,
sysconfig now aliases $XXFLAGS=$PY_XXFLAGS so that scripts using it keep
working. I see that as the right interface, not a backward-compatibility hack,
since these are logically the $XXFLAGS variables; we just use a different name
in the makefile to deal with make's semantics.
from the fact that OPT contains -Wall be default. This is annoying when
compilers like clang have thorough debugging information about things that
Python does extensively (e.g. -Wunused-value for unused return values caused by
a macro use).
http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/ThreadSanitizer is a dynamic data
race detector that runs on top of valgrind. With this patch, the binaries at
http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/ThreadSanitizer#Binaries pass many
but not all of the Python tests. All of regrtest still passes outside of tsan.
I've implemented part of the C1x atomic types so that we can explicitly mark
variables that are used across threads, and get defined behavior as compilers
advance.
I've added tsan's client header and implementation to the codebase in
dynamic_annotations.{h,c} (docs at
http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/DynamicAnnotations).
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get helgrind and drd to give sensible
error messages, even when I use their client annotations, so I'm not supporting
them.

Issue #6834: replace the implementation for the 'python' and 'pythonw' executables on OSX.
The previous implementation used execv(2) to run the real interpreter, which means that
you cannot use the arch(1) tool to select the architecture you want to use for a
universal build because that only affects the python/pythonw wrapper and not the actual
interpreter.
The new version uses posix_spawnv with a number of OSX-specific options that ensure that
the real interpreter is started using the same CPU architecture as the wrapper, and that
means that 'arch -ppc python' now actually works.
I've also changed the way that the wrapper looks for the framework: it is now linked to
the framework rather than hardcoding the framework path. This should make it easier to
provide pythonw support in tools like virtualenv.

This checkin adds a symlink to the lib directory of a framework install
of Python (on OSX), and the end result of that is that the combination of
``python-config --ldflags`` and ``python-config --libs`` refers to an actually
existing location.
I've done this in preference to changing python-config to specify
'-framework Python' for linking because that doesn't work when you have multiple
versions of python installed (because '-framework Python' will always link to
the 'Current' version of the framework, without a possibility to specify a
specific version).
........
added as a build flag as needed. This then led to the discovery that OS X
framework builds did not have the LIBS var to pick up this flag.

Issue #5161: wrong paths for ctypes cleanup when Python is built in a
directory other than the source directory.
........
- incorporate and adapt David Gay's dtoa and strtod
into the Python core
- on platforms where we can use Gay's code (almost
all!), repr(float) is based on the shortest
sequence of decimal digits that rounds correctly.
- add sys.float_repr_style attribute to indicate
whether we're using Gay's code or not
- add autoconf magic to detect and enable SSE2
instructions on x86/gcc
- slight change to repr and str: repr switches
to exponential notation at 1e16 instead of
1e17, str switches at 1e11 instead of 1e12
The main io module now uses the C implementation. The Python one still exists
in Lib/_pyio.py for ease of testing new features and usefulness to other
implementers.
The rewrite was done by Antoine Pitrou and Amaury Forgeot d'Arc. I was slightly
helpful at the end. :)

GNU coding guidelines say that ``make check`` should verify the build. That
clashes with what Python's build target did. Rename the target to 'patchcheck'
to avoid the culture clash.

MacOS X: Enable 4-way universal builds
This patch adds a new configure argument on OSX:
--with-universal-archs=[32-bit|64-bit|all]
When used with the --enable-universalsdk option this controls which
CPU architectures are includes in the framework. The default is 32-bit,
meaning i386 and ppc. The most useful alternative is 'all', which includes
all 4 CPU architectures supported by MacOS X (i386, ppc, x86_64 and ppc64).
This includes limited support for the Carbon bindings in 64-bit mode as well,
limited because (a) I haven't done extensive testing and (b) a large portion
of the Carbon API's aren't available in 64-bit mode anyway.
I've also duplicated a feature of Apple's build of python: setting the
environment variable 'ARCHFLAGS' controls the '-arch' flags used for building
extensions using distutils.
........
Removal of the Mac modules broke many of the Mac scripts (including
BuildApplet.py) so the building of the Python launcher and IDLE.app was
broken. I manually copied built versions of those apps into Mac. Everything else
which used Mac modules had to die.
