Raymond Hettinger fd7ed407d7 Give meaning to the oparg for BUILD_MAP: estimated size of the dictionary.
Allows dictionaries to be pre-sized (upto 255 elements) saving time lost
to re-sizes with their attendant mallocs and re-insertions.

Has zero effect on small dictionaries (5 elements or fewer), a slight
benefit for dicts upto 22 elements (because they had to resize once
anyway), and more benefit for dicts upto 255 elements (saving multiple
resizes during the build-up and reducing the number of collisions on
the first insertions). Beyond 255 elements, there is no addional benefit.

Raymond Hettinger effde12f5f Speed-up dictionary constructor by about 10%.
New opcode, STORE_MAP saves the compiler from awkward stack manipulations
and specializes for dicts using PyDict_SetItem instead of PyObject_SetItem.

Old disassembly:
              0 BUILD_MAP 0
              3 DUP_TOP
              4 LOAD_CONST 1 (1)
              7 ROT_TWO
              8 LOAD_CONST 2 ('x')
             11 STORE_SUBSCR
             12 DUP_TOP
             13 LOAD_CONST 3 (2)
             16 ROT_TWO
             17 LOAD_CONST 4 ('y')
             20 STORE_SUBSCR

New disassembly:
              0 BUILD_MAP 0
              3 LOAD_CONST 1 (1)
              6 LOAD_CONST 2 ('x')
              9 STORE_MAP

Christian Heimes 284d927625 Backport of r59456:59458 from py3k to trunk
Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.

Thanks to noam for the patch! I had to modify doubledigits.c slightly to support X64 and IA64 machines on Windows. I also added the new file to the three project files.

Christian Heimes e8954f8ce7 Backport of the PCbuild9 directory from the py3k branch.
I've finished the last task for the PCbuild9 directory today. I don't think there is much left to do. Now you can all play around with the shiny new VS 2008 and try the PGO builds. I was able to get a speed improvement of about 10% on py3k.
Have fun! :)

Neal Norwitz ee3a1b5244 Variation of patch # 1624059 to speed up checking if an object is a subclass
of some of the common builtin types.

Use a bit in tp_flags for each common builtin type. Check the bit
to determine if any instance is a subclass of these common types.
The check avoids a function call and O(n) search of the base classes.
The check is done in the various Py*_Check macros rather than calling
PyType_IsSubtype().

All the bits are set in tp_flags when the type is declared
in the Objects/*object.c files because PyType_Ready() is not called
for all the types. Should PyType_Ready() be called for all types?
If so and the change is made, the changes to the Objects/*object.c files
can be reverted (remove setting the tp_flags). Objects/typeobject.c
would also have to be modified to add conditions
for Py*_CheckExact() in addition to each the PyType_IsSubtype check.

In order to avoid compiler warnings on OS X 10.4, also change the order of the check

46647 Markup fix

The first is causing many buildbots to fail test runs, and there
are multiple causes with seemingly no immediate prospects for
repairing them. See python-dev discussion.

Note that a branch can (and should) be created for resolving these
problems, like

followed by merging rev 46647 to the new branch.

set_exc_info(), reset_exc_info():  By exploiting the
likely (who knows?) invariant that when an exception's
`type` is NULL, its `value` and `traceback` are also NULL,
save some cycles in heavily-executed code.

This is a "a kronar saved is a kronar earned" patch: the
speedup isn't reliably measurable, but it obviously does
reduce the operation count in the normal (no exception
raised) path through PyEval_EvalFrameEx().

The tim-exc_sanity branch tries to push this harder, but
is still blowing up (at least in part due to pre-existing
subtle bugs that appear to have no other visible
consequences!).

Not a bugfix candidate.

Thomas Wouters 9df4e6f673 - Add new Warning class, ImportWarning
- Warn-raise ImportWarning when importing would have picked up a directory
as package, if only it'd had an __init__.py. This swaps two tests (for
case-ness and __init__-ness), but case-test is not really more expensive,
   and it's not in a speed-critical section.

 - Test for the new warning by importing a common non-package directory on
   sys.path: site-packages

 - In regrtest.py, silence warnings generated by the build-environment
because Modules/ (which is added to sys.path for Setup-created modules)
has 'zlib' and '_ctypes' directories without __init__.py's.

Thomas Wouters 1ddba60e3d Define MAXPATHLEN to be at least PATH_MAX, if that's defined. Python uses
MAXPATHLEN-sized buffers for various output-buffers (like to realpath()),
and that's correct on BSD platforms, but not Linux (which uses PATH_MAX, and
does not define MAXPATHLEN.) Cursory googling suggests Linux is following a
newer standard than BSD, but in cases like this, who knows. Using the
greater of PATH_MAX and 1024 as a fallback for MAXPATHLEN seems to be the
most portable solution.

Tim Peters c9d78aa470 Years in the making.
objimpl.h, pymem.h:  Stop mapping PyMem_{Del, DEL} and PyMem_{Free, FREE}
to PyObject_{Free, FREE} in a release build. They're aliases for the
system free() now.

_subprocess.c/sp_handle_dealloc(): Since the memory was originally
obtained via PyObject_NEW, it must be released via PyObject_FREE (or
_DEL).

pythonrun.c, tokenizer.c, parsermodule.c: I lost count of the number of
PyObject vs PyMem mismatches in these -- it's like the specific
function called at each site was picked at random, sometimes even with
memory obtained via PyMem getting released via PyObject. Changed most
to use PyObject uniformly, since the blobs allocated are predictably
small in most cases, and obmalloc is generally faster than system
mallocs then.

If extension modules in real life prove as sloppy as Python's front
end, we'll have to revert the objimpl.h + pymem.h part of this patch.
Note that no problems will show up in a debug build (all calls still go
thru obmalloc then). Problems will show up only in a release build, most
likely segfaults.

Thomas Wouters f7f438ba3b SF patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports.
- IMPORT_NAME takes an extra argument from the stack: the relativeness of
the import. Only passed to __import__ when it's not -1.

 - __import__() takes an optional 5th argument for the same thing; it
__defaults to -1 (old semantics: try relative, then absolute)

 - 'from . import name' imports name (be it module or regular attribute)
from the current module's *package*. Likewise, 'from .module import name'
will import name from a sibling to the current module.

 - Importing from outside a package is not allowed; 'from . import sys' in a
toplevel module will not work, nor will 'from .. import sys' in a
   (single-level) package.

 - 'from __future__ import absolute_import' will turn on the new semantics
for import and from-import: imports will be absolute, except for
   from-import with dots.

Includes tests for regular imports and importhooks, parser changes and a
NEWS item, but no compiler-package changes or documentation changes.

Thomas Wouters dca3b9c797 PEP 308 implementation, including minor refdocs and some testcases. It
breaks the parser module, because it adds the if/else construct as well as
two new grammar rules for backward compatibility. If no one else fixes
parsermodule, I guess I'll go ahead and fix it later this week.

The TeX code was checked with texcheck.py, but not rendered. There is
actually a slight incompatibility:

>>> (x for x in lambda:0)
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: iteration over non-sequence

changes into

>>> (x for x in lambda: 0)
  File "<stdin>", line 1
    (x for x in lambda: 0)
                     ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

Since there's no way the former version can be useful, it's probably a
bugfix ;)

Jeremy Hylton af68c874a6 Add const to several API functions that take char *.
In C++, it's an error to pass a string literal to a char* function
without a const_cast(). Rather than require every C++ extension
module to put a cast around string literals, fix the API to state the
const-ness.

I focused on parts of the API where people usually pass literals:
PyArg_ParseTuple() and friends, Py_BuildValue(), PyMethodDef, the type
slots, etc. Predictably, there were a large set of functions that
needed to be fixed as a result of these changes. The most pervasive
change was to make the keyword args list passed to
PyArg_ParseTupleAndKewords() to be a const char *kwlist[].

One cast was required as a result of the changes: A type object
mallocs the memory for its tp_doc slot and later frees it.
PyTypeObject says that tp_doc is const char *; but if the type was
created by type_new(), we know it is safe to cast to char *.

Phillip J. Eby 0d6615fd29 PEP 342 implementation. Per Guido's comments, the generator throw()
method still needs to support string exceptions, and allow None for the
third argument. Documentation updates are needed, too.

Raymond Hettinger d794666048 * Improve code for the empty frozenset singleton:
- Handle both frozenset() and frozenset([]).
  - Do not use singleton for frozenset subclasses.
  - Finalize the singleton.
  - Add test cases.
* Factor-out set_update_internal() from set_update().  Simplifies the
  code for several internal callers.
* Factor constant expressions out of loop in set_merge_internal().
* Minor comment touch-ups.

Raymond Hettinger 9f1a6796eb Revised the set() and frozenset() implementaion to use its own internal
data structure instead of using dictionaries. Reduces memory consumption
by 1/3 and provides modest speed-ups for most set operations.

Michael W. Hudson df88846ebc This is my patch:
[ 1180995 ] binary formats for marshalling floats

Adds 2 new type codes for marshal (binary floats and binary complexes), a
new marshal version (2), updates MAGIC and fiddles the de-serializing of
code objects to be less likely to clobber the real reason for failing if
it fails.

Michael W. Hudson ba283e2b7f This is my patch:
[ 1181301 ] make float packing copy bytes when they can

which hasn't been reviewed, despite numerous threats to check it in
anyway if noone reviews it. Please read the diff on the checkin list,
at least!

The basic idea is to examine the bytes of some 'probe values' to see if
the current platform is a IEEE 754-ish platform, and if so
_PyFloat_{Pack,Unpack}{4,8} just copy bytes around.

The rest is hair for testing, and tests.

Raymond Hettinger ec6eb369d5 SF patch #1035255: Remove CoreServices / CoreFoundation dependencies in core
(Contributed by Bob Ippolito.)

This patch trims down the Python core on Darwin by making it
independent of CoreFoundation and CoreServices. It does this by:

Changed linker flags in configure/configure.in
Removed the unused PyMac_GetAppletScriptFile
Moved the implementation of PyMac_StrError to the MacOS module
Moved the implementation of PyMac_GetFullPathname to the
Carbon.File module
