Serhiy Storchaka b72810583e Issue #27213: Fixed different issues with reworked CALL_FUNCTION* opcodes.
* BUILD_TUPLE_UNPACK and BUILD_MAP_UNPACK_WITH_CALL no longer generated with
  single tuple or dict.
* Restored more informative error messages for incorrect var-positional and
  var-keyword arguments.
* Removed code duplications in _PyEval_EvalCodeWithName().
* Removed redundant runtime checks and parameters in _PyStack_AsDict().
* Added a workaround and enabled previously disabled test in test_traceback.
* Removed dead code from the dis module.

Victor Stinner a9efb2f56e Add METH_FASTCALL calling convention
Issue #27810: Add a new calling convention for C functions:

    PyObject* func(PyObject *self, PyObject **args,
                   Py_ssize_t nargs, PyObject *kwnames);

Where args is a C array of positional arguments followed by values of keyword
arguments. nargs is the number of positional arguments, kwnames are keys of
keyword arguments. kwnames can be NULL.

Victor Stinner ae8b69c410 Issue #27810: Add _PyCFunction_FastCallKeywords()
Use _PyCFunction_FastCallKeywords() in ceval.c: it allows to remove a lot of
code from ceval.c which was only used to call C functions.

Victor Stinner 74319ae219 Use Py_ssize_t type for number of arguments
Issue #27848: use Py_ssize_t rather than C int for the number of function
positional and keyword arguments.

Victor Stinner b900939186 _PyFunction_FastCallDict() supports keyword args
Issue #27809:

* Rename _PyFunction_FastCall() to _PyFunction_FastCallDict()
* Rename _PyCFunction_FastCall() to _PyCFunction_FastCallDict()
* _PyFunction_FastCallDict() now supports keyword arguments
2016-08-22 23:15:44 +02:00
Victor Stinner 9be7e7b52f Add _PyObject_FastCall()
Issue #27128: Add _PyObject_FastCall(), a new calling convention avoiding a
temporary tuple to pass positional parameters in most cases, but create a
temporary tuple if needed (ex: for the tp_call slot).

The API is prepared to support keyword parameters, but the full implementation
will come later (_PyFunction_FastCall() doesn't support keyword parameters
yet).

Add also:

* _PyStack_AsTuple() helper function: convert a "stack" of parameters to
  a tuple.
* _PyCFunction_FastCall(): fast call implementation for C functions
* _PyFunction_FastCall(): fast call implementation for Python functions

Victor Stinner efde146b0c Issue #23571: _Py_CheckFunctionResult() now gives the name of the function
which returned an invalid result (result+error or no result without error) in
the exception message.

Add also unit test to check that the exception contains the name of the
function.

Special case: the final _PyEval_EvalFrameEx() check doesn't mention the
function since it didn't execute a single function but a whole frame.

Victor Stinner 4a7cc88472 Issue #23571: PyObject_Call(), PyCFunction_Call() and call_function() now
raise a SystemError if a function returns a result and raises an exception.
The SystemError is chained to the previous exception.

Refactor also PyObject_Call() and PyCFunction_Call() to make them more readable.

Remove some checks which became useless (duplicate checks).

Change reviewed by Serhiy Storchaka.

Larry Hastings 2623c8c23c Issue #20530: Argument Clinic's signature format has been revised again.
The new syntax is highly human readable while still preventing false
positives. The syntax also extends Python syntax to denote "self" and
positional-only parameters, allowing inspect.Signature objects to be
totally accurate for all supported builtins in Python 3.4.

Larry Hastings 581ee3618c Issue #20326: Argument Clinic now uses a simple, unique signature to
annotate text signatures in docstrings, resulting in fewer false
positives. "self" parameters are also explicitly marked, allowing
inspect.Signature() to authoritatively detect (and skip) said parameters.

Issue #20326: Argument Clinic now generates separate checksums for the
input and output sections of the block, allowing external tools to verify
that the input has not changed (and thus the output is not out-of-date).

#1750076: Debugger did not step on every iteration of a while statement.

The mapping between bytecode offsets and source lines (lnotab) did not contain
an entry for the beginning of the loop.

Now it does, and the lnotab can be a bit larger:
in particular, several statements on the same line generate several entries.
However, this does not bother the settrace function, which will trigger only
  one 'line' event.

The lnotab seems to be exactly the same as with python2.4.

Martin v. Löwis 5b222135f8 Make identifiers str (not str8) objects throughout.
This affects the parser, various object implementations,
and all places that put identifiers into C string literals.

In testing, a number of crashes occurred as code would
fail when the recursion limit was reached (such as the
Unicode interning dictionary having key/value pairs where
key is not value). To solve these, I added an overflowed
flag, which allows for 50 more recursions after the
limit was reached and the exception was raised, and
a recursion_critical flag, which indicates that recursion
absolutely must be allowed, i.e. that a certain call
must not cause a stack overflow exception.

There are still some places where both str and str8 are
accepted as identifiers; these should eventually be
removed.

Guido van Rossum 47b9ff6ba1 Restructure comparison dramatically. There is no longer a default
*ordering* between objects; there is only a default equality test
(defined by an object being equal to itself only). Read the comment
in object.c. The current implementation never uses a three-way
comparison to compute a rich comparison, but it does use a rich
comparison to compute a three-way comparison. I'm not quite done
ripping out all the calls to PyObject_Compare/Cmp, or replacing
tp_compare implementations with tp_richcompare implementations;
but much of that has happened (to make most unit tests pass).

The following tests still fail, because I need help deciding
or understanding:

test_codeop -- depends on comparing code objects
test_datetime -- need Tim Peters' opinion
test_marshal -- depends on comparing code objects
test_mutants -- need help understanding it

The problem with test_codeop and test_marshal is this: these tests
compare two different code objects and expect them to be equal.
Is that still a feature we'd like to support? I've temporarily
removed the comparison and hash code from code objects, so they
use the default (equality by pointer only) comparison.

For the other two tests, run them to see for yourself.
(There may be more failing test with "-u all".)

A general problem with getting lots of these tests to pass is
the reality that for object types that have a natural total ordering,
implementing __cmp__ is much more convenient than implementing
__eq__, __ne__, __lt__, and so on. Should we go back to allowing
__cmp__ to provide a total ordering? Should we provide some other
way to implement rich comparison with a single method override?
Alex proposed a __key__() method; I've considered a __richcmp__()
method. Or perhaps __cmp__() just shouldn't be killed off...

Thomas Wouters 49fd7fa443 Merge p3yk branch with the trunk up to revision 45595. This breaks a fair
number of tests, all because of the codecs/_multibytecodecs issue described
here (it's not a Py3K issue, just something Py3K discovers):
http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2006-April/064051.html

Hye-Shik Chang promised to look for a fix, so no need to fix it here. The
tests that are expected to break are:

test_codecencodings_cn
test_codecencodings_hk
test_codecencodings_jp
test_codecencodings_kr
test_codecencodings_tw
test_codecs
test_multibytecodec

This merge fixes an actual test failure (test_weakref) in this branch,
though, so I believe merging is the right thing to do anyway.

Jeremy Hylton af68c874a6 Add const to several API functions that take char *.
In C++, it's an error to pass a string literal to a char* function
without a const_cast(). Rather than require every C++ extension
module to put a cast around string literals, fix the API to state the
const-ness.

I focused on parts of the API where people usually pass literals:
PyArg_ParseTuple() and friends, Py_BuildValue(), PyMethodDef, the type
slots, etc. Predictably, there were a large set of functions that
needed to be fixed as a result of these changes. The most pervasive
change was to make the keyword args list passed to
PyArg_ParseTupleAndKewords() to be a const char *kwlist[].

One cast was required as a result of the changes: A type object
mallocs the memory for its tp_doc slot and later frees it.
PyTypeObject says that tp_doc is const char *; but if the type was
created by type_new(), we know it is safe to cast to char *.

__module__ is the string name of the module the function was defined
in, just like __module__ of classes. In some cases, particularly for
C functions, the __module__ may be None.

Change PyCFunction_New() from a function to a macro, but keep an
unused copy of the function around so that we don't change the binary
API.

Change pickle's save_global() to use whichmodule() if __module__ is
None, but add the __module__ logic to whichmodule() since it might be
used outside of pickle.

Raymond Hettinger bf43f8af35 SF Patch #661440: Refactor and streamline PyCFunction_Call
Refactor code in PyCFunction_Call giving a modest (tiny) speed boost,
a slight improvement in semantics (now detects invalid flag combinations),
and (arguably) improved clarity (making it blindingly clear which flag
combinations are allowed). All this comes at a cost of a few lines of
code duplication.

* Folded test for METH_KEYWORDS into the switch/case.
* Deferred testing for an empty dictionary until when and where needed.
* Make a similar deferral for filling the "size" variable.
* Inverted the dictionary test so that the common case falls though
  instead of making a jump.

Fred Drake 7bf9715a8b Introduce two new flag bits that can be set in a PyMethodDef method
descriptor, as used for the tp_methods slot of a type. These new flag
bits are both optional, and mutually exclusive. Most methods will not
use either. These flags are used to create special method types which
exist in the same namespace as normal methods without having to use
tedious construction code to insert the new special method objects in
the type's tp_dict after PyType_Ready() has been called.

If METH_CLASS is specified, the method will represent a class method
like that returned by the classmethod() built-in.

If METH_STATIC is specified, the method will represent a static method
like that returned by the staticmethod() built-in.

These flags may not be used in the PyMethodDef table for modules since
these special method types are not meaningful in that case; a
ValueError will be raised if these flags are found in that context.

no backwards compatibility to worry about, so I just pushed the
'closure' struct member to the back -- it's never used in the current
code base (I may eliminate it, but that's more work because the getter
and setter signatures would have to change.)

As examples, I added actual docstrings to the getset attributes of a
few types: file.closed, xxsubtype.spamdict.state.

Fred Drake a44d353e2b Trent Mick <trentm@activestate.com>:
The common technique for printing out a pointer has been to cast to a long
and use the "%lx" printf modifier. This is incorrect on Win64 where casting
to a long truncates the pointer. The "%p" formatter should be used instead.

The problem as stated by Tim:
> Unfortunately, the C committee refused to define what %p conversion "looks
> like" -- they explicitly allowed it to be implementation-defined. Older
> versions of Microsoft C even stuck a colon in the middle of the address (in
> the days of segment+offset addressing)!

The result is that the hex value of a pointer will maybe/maybe not have a 0x
prepended to it.

Notes on the patch:

There are two main classes of changes:
- in the various repr() functions that print out pointers
- debugging printf's in the various thread_*.h files (these are why the
patch is large)

Closes SourceForge patch #100505.
2000-06-30 15:01:00 +00:00
Fred Drake 13634cf7a4 This patch addresses two main issues: (1) There exist some non-fatal
errors in some of the hash algorithms. For exmaple, in float_hash and
complex_hash a certain part of the value is not included in the hash
calculation. See Tim's, Guido's, and my discussion of this on
python-dev in May under the title "fix float_hash and complex_hash for
64-bit *nix"

(2) The hash algorithms that use pointers (e.g. func_hash, code_hash)
are universally not correct on Win64 (they assume that sizeof(long) ==
sizeof(void*))

As well, this patch significantly cleans up the hash code. It adds the
two function _Py_HashDouble and _PyHash_VoidPtr that the various
hashing routine are changed to use.

These help maintain the hash function invariant: (a==b) =>
(hash(a)==hash(b))) I have added Lib/test/test_hash.py and
Lib/test/output/test_hash to test this for some cases.
