Apparently, the number of objects with docstrings in builtins varies
with --with-pydebug (non-debug has one fewer).
Also, skip the new tests entirely if built --without-doc-strings.
written in C.
As a part of this, a few doctests have been added to the builtins module
(on hex(), oct(), and bin()), a doctest has been fixed (hopefully on all
platforms) on float, and test_builtins now runs doctests in builtins.
This provides a way to specify arbitrary doctest options when using
the CLI interface to process test files, just as one can when calling
testmod or testfile programmatically.
Many tests simply didn't care if they unset a pre-existing trace function. This
made test coverage impossible. This patch fixes various tests to put back any
pre-existing trace function. It also introduces test.support.no_tracing as a
decorator which will temporarily unset the trace function for tests which
simply fail otherwise.
Thanks to Kristian Vlaardingerbroek for helping to find the cause of various
trace function unsets.

Surprising behaviour of the "$" regexp: it matches the
end of the string, AND just before the newline at the end
of the string::

Python is consistent with Perl and the pcre library, so
we just document it.
Guido prefers "\Z" to match only the end of the string.

Continue rolling back pep-3141 changes that changed behavior from 2.5. This
round included:
* Revert round to its 2.6 behavior (half away from 0).
* Because round, floor, and ceil always return float again, it's no
longer necessary to have them delegate to __xxx___, so I've ripped
that out of their implementations and the Real ABC. This also helps
in implementing types that work in both 2.6 and 3.0: you return int
from the __xxx__ methods, and let it get enabled by the version
upgrade.

Final fix for #1403
The Windows installer and some Linux distros are using compileall to compile all py files in the Lib/ directory. However no test exists to check if all py files can be compiled. I figured out that make testall is the easiest way to test compileall.
........
The formatting of errors from pdb's own print command is different
from the formatting of errors when pdb exec's an arbitrary command;
the introduction of print as a pdb command caused this test to use
the former instead of the latter, causing the test to fail.
Completely get rid of StringIO.py and cStringIO.c.
I had to fix a few tests and modules beyond what Christian did, and
invent a few conventions. E.g. in elementtree, I chose to
write/return Unicode strings whe no encoding is given, but bytes when
an explicit encoding is given. Also mimetools was made to always
assume binary files.

Found another place that needs check for forbidden names.
Fixed test_syntax.py accordingly (it helped me find that one).

Try to fix up all the other places that were assigning to True/False.
There's at least one more problem in test.test_xmlrpc. I have other
changes in that file and that should be fixed soon (I hope).

Fix a fairly long-standing bug in the check for assignment to None (and other
keywords, these days). In 2.5, you could write foo(None=1) without getting
a SyntaxError (although foo()'s definition would have to use **kwds to avoid
getting a runtime error complaining about an unknown keyword of course).
This ought to be backported to 2.5.2 or at least 2.6.
