"python3 -m test -jN ..." now continues the execution of next tests
when a worker process crash (CHILD_ERROR state). Previously, the test
suite stopped immediately. Use --failfast to stop at the first error.
Moreover, --forever now also implies --failfast.
In the parser, when using the type_comments=True option, recognize
a TYPE_IGNORE as anything containing `# type: ignore` followed by
a non-alphanumeric character. This is to allow ignores such as
`# type: ignore[E1000]`.
The multiprocessing.resource_tracker replaces the multiprocessing.semaphore_tracker module. Other than semaphores, resource_tracker also tracks shared_memory segments. Patch by Pierre Glaser.
Add new trashcan macros to deal with a double deallocation that could occur when the `tp_dealloc` of a subclass calls the `tp_dealloc` of a base class and that base class uses the trashcan mechanism.

Extended attributes can only be set on user-writeable files, but shutil previously
first chmod()ed the destination file to the source's permissions and then tried to
copy xattrs. This will cause failures if attempting to copy read-only files with
xattrs, as occurs with Git clones on Lustre FS.
If a "=" is specified a the end of an f-string expression, the f-string will evaluate to the text of the expression, followed by '=', followed by the repr of the value of the expression.
Allow reduction methods to return a 6-item tuple where the 6th item specifies a
custom state-setting method that's called instead of the regular
``__setstate__`` method.

When the future returned by shield is cancelled, its completion callback of the
inner future is not removed. This makes the callback list of inner inner future
grow each time a shield is created and cancelled.
This change unregisters the callback from the inner future when the outer
future is cancelled.

The `_SelectorDatagramTransport.sendto` method has to be modified ~~so `_sock.sendto` is used in all cases (because it is tricky to reliably tell if the socket is connected or not). Could that be an issue for connected sockets?~~ *EDIT* ... so `_sock.send` is used only if `_sock` is connected.
It also protects `socket.getsockname` against `OSError` in `_SelectorTransport`. This might happen on Windows if the socket is not connected (e.g. for UDP broadcasting).

Instead of attempting to acquire and release them all across fork
which was leading to deadlocks in some applications that had chained
their own handlers while holding multiple locks.
Modern Linux distros such as Debian Buster have default OpenSSL system
configurations that reject connections to servers with weak certificates
by default. This causes our test suite run with external networking
resources enabled to skip these tests when they encounter such a failure.
Fixing the network servers is a separate issue.

In the process of converting the date.fromtimestamp function to use
argument clinic in GH-8535, the C API for PyDate_FromTimestamp was
inadvertently changed to expect a timestamp object rather than an
argument tuple.
This PR fixes this backwards-incompatible change by adding a new wrapper
function for the C API function that unwraps the argument tuple and
passes it to the underlying function.
This PR also adds tests for both PyDate_FromTimestamp and
PyDateTime_FromTimestamp to prevent any further regressions.
regrtest now always detects uncollectable objects. Previously, the
check was only enabled by --findleaks. The check now also works with
-jN/--multiprocess N.
--findleaks becomes a deprecated alias to --fail-env-changed.
Rewrite run_tests_multiprocess() function as a new MultiprocessRunner
class with multiple methods to better report errors and stop
immediately when needed.

Release build and debug build are now ABI compatible: the Py_DEBUG

PYTHONDUMPREFS environment variable.

Change test_time.test_monotonic() to test only the lower bound of elapsed time

Add a new _testinternalcapi module to test the internal C API.
Move _Py_GetConfigsAsDict() function to the internal C API:
_testembed now uses _testinternalcapi to access the function.
shutil.which() and distutils.spawn.find_executable() now use
os.confstr("CS_PATH") if available instead of os.defpath, if the PATH
environment variable is not set.
Don't use os.confstr("CS_PATH") nor os.defpath if the PATH
environment variable is set to an empty string to mimick Unix 'which'
command behavior.

IPv4Interface and IPv6Interface did not has netmask and hostmask

exceptions.

Omit serialno field from debug hooks on Python memory allocators to
reduce the memory footprint by 5%.
Enable tracemalloc to get the traceback where a memory block has been
allocated when a fatal memory error is logged to decide where to put
a breakpoint.
Compile Python with PYMEM_DEBUG_SERIALNO defined to get back the
field.
This is effectively an un-revert of #11617 and #12024 (reverted in #12159). Portions of those were merged in other PRs (with lower risk) and this represents the remainder. Note that I found 3 different bugs in the original PRs and have fixed them here.
In development mode (-X dev) and in debug build, the io.IOBase
destructor now logs close() exceptions. These exceptions are silent
by default in release mode.

Modify CLEANBYTE, DEADDYTE and FORBIDDENBYTE constants: use 0xCD,
0xDD and 0xFD, rather than 0xCB, 0xBB and 0xFB, to use the same byte
patterns than Windows CRT debug malloc() and free().
Replace _PyMem_IsFreed() function with _PyMem_IsPtrFreed() inline
function. The function is now way more efficient, it became a simple
comparison on integers, rather than a short loop. It detects also
uninitialized bytes and "forbidden bytes" filled by debug hooks
on memory allocators.
Add unit tests on _PyObject_IsFreed().
dash_R() function of libregrtest doesn't call support.gc_collect()
directly anymore: it's already called by dash_R_cleanup().
Call dash_R_cleanup() before starting the loop.
Fix reference leak hunting in regrtest: compute also deltas (of
reference count, allocated memory blocks, file descriptor count)
during warmup, to ensure that everything is initialized before
starting to hunt reference leaks.
Other changes:
* Replace gc.collect() with support.gc_collect()
* Move calls to read memory statistics from dash_R_cleanup() to
dash_R()
* Pass regrtest 'ns' to dash_R()
* dash_R() is now more quiet with --quiet option (don't display
progress).

* dash_R() now is responsible to call warm_caches().
While Windows exposes the system processor queue length, the raw value
used for load calculations on Unix systems, it does not provide an API
to access the averaged value. Hence to calculate the load we must track
and average it ourselves. We can't use multiprocessing or a thread to
read it in the background while the tests run since using those would
conflict with test_multiprocessing and test_xxsubprocess.
Thus, we use Window's asynchronous IO API to run the tracker in the
background with it sampling at the correct rate. When we wish to access
the load we check to see if there's new data on the stream, if there is,
we update our load values.
* Properly handle SyntaxErrors in Python source files.
SyntaxErrors in the target module will rise normally, while SyntaxErrors in dependencies will be added to badmodules. This includes a new regression test.
* Fix name collision bug.
This fixes an issue where a "fromlist" import with the same name as a previously failed import would be incorrectly added to badmodules. This includes a new regression test.
* Replace mutable default values.
Bound empty lists have been replaced with the "if param is None" idiom.
* Replace deprecated imp usage.
Constants imported from imp have been moved to private module-level constants, and ModuleFinder.find_module has been refactored to use importlib. Other than an improvement on how frozen builtin imports are reported (as the frozen imports they are, rather than the stdlib modules they *may* have originated from), these changes maintain complete compatibility with past versions... including odd behavior for returning relative (below current directory, but not a C extension) vs. absolute (above current directory, or a C extension) paths.

Also allowed to pass arbitrary keyword arguments (even "self" and "func")

Stop rejecting IPv4 octets with leading zeroes as ambiguously octal.
Plenty of other tools generate decimal IPv4 octets with leading zeroes,
so keeping this check hurts interoperability.

bpo-36443, bpo-36202: Since Python 3.7.0, calling Py_DecodeLocale()
before Py_Initialize() produces mojibake if the LC_CTYPE locale is
coerced and/or if the UTF-8 Mode is enabled by the user
configuration. This change fix the issue by disabling LC_CTYPE
coercion and UTF-8 Mode by default. They must now be enabled
explicitly (opt-in) using the new _Py_PreInitialize() API with
_PyPreConfig.
When embedding Python, set coerce_c_locale and utf8_mode attributes
of _PyPreConfig to -1 to enable automatically these parameters
depending on the LC_CTYPE locale, environment variables and command
line arguments
Alternative: Setting Py_UTF8Mode to 1 always explicitly enables the
UTF-8 Mode.

* _PyPreConfig_INIT now sets coerce_c_locale and utf8_mode to 0 by
default.

Now that the parser generator is written in Python (Parser/pgen) we can make use of it to regenerate the Lib/keyword file that contains the language keywords instead of parsing the autogenerated grammar files. This also allows checking in the CI that the autogenerated files are up to date.
Before, an `AttributeError` was raised due to trying to access an attribute that exists on specs but having received `None` instead for a non-existent module.

bpo-36256: Fix bug in parsermodule when parsing if statements
In the parser module, when validating nodes before starting the parsing with to create a ST in "parser_newstobject" there is a problem that appears when two arcs in the same DFA state has transitions with labels with the same type. For example, the DFA for if_stmt has a state with
two labels with the same type: "elif" and "else" (type NAME). The algorithm tries one by one the arcs until the label that starts the arc transition has a label with the same type of the current child label we are trying to accept. In this case, the arc for "elif" comes before the arc for "else"and passes this test (because the current child label is "else" and has the same type as "elif"). This lead to expecting a namedexpr_test (305) instead of a colon (11). The solution is to compare also the string representation (in case there is one) of the labels to see if the transition that we have is the correct one.
The value is a string for string and byte literals, None otherwise.
It is 'u' for u"..." literals, 'b' for b"..." literals, '' for "..." literals.
The 'r' (raw) prefix is ignored.
Does not apply to f-strings.
This appears sufficient to make mypy capable of using the stdlib ast module instead of typed_ast (assuming a mypy patch I'm working on).

Don't send cookies of domain A without Domain attribute to domain B when domain A is a suffix match of domain B while using a cookiejar with `http.cookiejar.DefaultCookiePolicy` policy. Patch by Karthikeyan Singaravelan.
The overflow check was relying on undefined behaviour as it was using the result of the multiplication to do the check, and once the overflow has already happened, any operation on the result is undefined behaviour.
Some extra checks that exercise code paths related to this are also added.
This adds a `feature_version` flag to `ast.parse()` (documented) and `compile()` (hidden) that allow tweaking the parser to support older versions of the grammar. In particular if `feature_version` is 5 or 6, the hacks for the `async` and `await` keyword from PEP 492 are reinstated. (For 7 or higher, these are unconditionally treated as keywords, but they are still special tokens rather than `NAME` tokens that the parser driver recognizes.)

priority over PYTHONDEV env var and "-X dev" command line option.
For example, PYTHONMALLOC=malloc PYTHONDEVMODE=1 sets the memory
allocators to "malloc" (and not to "debug").

Use locale.getpreferredencoding() rather than locale.getlocale() to
get the locale encoding. With some locales, locale.getlocale()
returns the wrong encoding.
For example, on Fedora 29, locale.getlocale() returns ISO-8859-1
encoding for the "en_IN" locale, whereas
locale.getpreferredencoding() reports the correct encoding: UTF-8.
Responding to suggestions on the tracker and some off-line suggestions.
Davin suggested that english named accessors instead of greek letters would result in more intelligible user code. Steven suggested that the parameters still need to be *mu* and *theta* which are used elsewhere (and I noted those parameter names are used in linked-to resources).
Michael suggested proving-out the API by seeing whether it generalized to *Lognormal*. I did so and found that Lognormal distribution parameters *mu* and *sigma* do not represent the mean and standard deviation of the lognormal distribution (instead, they are for the underlying regular normal distribution).
Putting these ideas together, we have NormalDist parameterized by *mu* and *sigma* but offering English named properties for accessors. That gives lets us match other API that access mu and sigma, it matches the external resources on the topic, gives us clear english names in user code. The API extends nicely to LogNormal where the parameters and the summary statistic accessors are not the same.

Trying to assign a value to __debug__ using the assignment operator is supposed to fail, but
a missing check for forbidden names when setting the context in the ast was preventing this behaviour.
Fix test_ssl for strict OpenSSL configuration like RHEL8 strict crypto policy.
Use older TLS version for minimum TLS version of the server SSL context if
needed, to test TLS version older than default minimum TLS version.
It checks that a SyntaxWarning is raised when compile specified
statement, that it is raised only once, that it is converted to
a SyntaxError when raised as exception, and that both warning and
exception objects have corresponding attributes.
Need to reset capturing groups between two SRE(match) callings in loops, this fixes wrong capturing groups in rare cases.
Also add a missing index in re.rst.
The error message emitted when returning invalid types from __fspath__ in interfaces that allow passing PathLike objects has been improved and now it does explain the origin of the error.
Not using `__class_getitem__()` fallback if there is a non-subcriptable metaclass was caused by a certain asymmetry between how `PySequenceMethods` and `PyMappingMethods` are used in `PyObject_GetItem`. This PR removes this asymmetry. No tests failed, so I assume it was not intentional.
It makes the existing smaller test more readable and robust at the same time.
The execution of a shell in interactive mode from CI and buildbot test automation wasn't working out. What would work locally in our terminals would only work within a fraction of automation systems. The integration test was a nice to have. painful. deleting. :)

An uncaught KeyboardInterrupt exception means the user pressed ^C and
our code did not handle it. Programs that install SIGINT handlers are
supposed to reraise the SIGINT signal to the SIG_DFL handler in order
to exit in a manner that their calling process can detect that they

After this change on POSIX systems

can be stopped via a simple Ctrl-C instead of the shell infinitely
restarting a new python process.

Previously, `debug print(` would cause the interpreter to exit on a SyntaxError whereas `print(` would properly display the error and return to the pdb prompt.
This patch fixes this by pre-compiling the code before passing it to `Pdb.run`.

[bpo-35633](https://bugs.python.org/issue35633): Fix a test regression introduced with [bpo-35189](https://bugs.python.org/issue35189) (PEP 475: fnctl functions are not retried if interrupted (EINTR)).
Not only a blocking IO error needs to be ignored - permission errors also need to be ignored.
p.s. - iirc as a "test" only correction a NEWS item is not required. If this is not correct - just mention, and I'll add a NEWS blurb.
