bpo-28604: Fix localeconv() for different LC_MONETARY (GH-10606)
locale.localeconv() now sets temporarily the LC_CTYPE locale to the
LC_MONETARY locale if the two locales are different and monetary
strings are non-ASCII. This temporary change affects other threads.

Changes:

* locale.localeconv() can now set LC_CTYPE to LC_MONETARY to decode
  monetary fields.
* Add LocaleInfo.grouping_buffer: copy localeconv() grouping string
  since it can be replaced anytime if a different thread calls
  localeconv().
* _Py_GetLocaleconvNumeric() now requires a "struct lconv *"
  structure, so locale.localeconv() now longer calls localeconv()
  twice. Moreover, the function now requires all arguments to be
  non-NULL.
* Rename STATIC_LOCALE_INFO_INIT to LocaleInfo_STATIC_INIT.
* Move _Py_GetLocaleconvNumeric() definition from fileutils.h
  to pycore_fileutils.h. pycore_fileutils.h now includes locale.h.
* The _locale module is now built with Py_BUILD_CORE defined.

Adds configure flags for msan and ubsan builds to make it easier to enable.
These also encode the detail that address sanitizer and memory sanitizer
should disable pymalloc.

Define MEMORY_SANITIZER when appropriate at build time and adds workarounds
to existing code to mark things as initialized where the sanitizer is otherwise unable to
determine that. This lets our build succeed under the memory sanitizer. not all tests
pass without sanitizer failures yet but we're in pretty good shape after this.

samstagern c64583b6d3 bpo-32409: Fix regression in activate.bat on international Windows (GH-10295)
Handle Unicode contents on localised Windows systems when activating a
venv. activate.bat currently breaks on German Windows systems, as chcp.com does
not return a plain number as on English systems, but (arbitrarily) appends a dot at the end
(for example "Aktive Codepage: 850." instead of "Active Codepage: 850"). The
dependency to chcp.com is removed and ctypes is used to get, set and restore the
console output code page. The code page for console input is not changed.

We can't use __VENV_PYTHON__ to find python.exe, since it's UTF-8. cmd.exe decodes
the script using the console output code page.

that this provides 12% difference in memory savings due to the difference
between overallocating and allocating exactly the input size.

For efficiency purposes and to avoid a performance regression for small
generators and collections, the size of the input object is calculated using
__len__ and not __length_hint__, as the later is considerably slower.

Elvis Pranskevichus a6b3ec5b6d bpo-34022: Stop forcing of hash-based invalidation with SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH (GH-9607)
Unconditional forcing of ``CHECKED_HASH`` invalidation was introduced in
3.7.0 in bpo-29708. The change is bad, as it unconditionally overrides
*invalidation_mode*, even if it was passed as an explicit argument to
``py_compile.compile()`` or ``compileall``. An environment variable
should *never* override an explicit argument to a library function.
That change leads to multiple test failures if the ``SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH``
environment variable is set.

This changes ``py_compile.compile()`` to only look at
``SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH`` if no explicit *invalidation_mode* was specified.
I also made various relevant tests run with explicit control over the
value of ``SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH``.

While looking at this, I noticed that ``zipimport`` does not work
with hash-based .pycs _at all_, though I left the fixes for
subsequent commits.

Elvis Pranskevichus 0c797a6aca bpo-34872: Fix self-cancellation in C implementation of asyncio.Task (GH-9679)
The C implementation of asyncio.Task currently fails to perform the
cancellation cleanup correctly in the following scenario.

    async def task1():
        async def task2():
            await task3     # task3 is never cancelled

        asyncio.current_task().cancel()
        await asyncio.create_task(task2())

The actuall error is a hardcoded call to `future_cancel()` instead of
calling the `cancel()` method of a future-like object.

Yury Selivanov for coming up with a pathological scenario.

Ross Burton 2a9c3805dd closes bpo-34585: Don't do runtime test to get float byte order. (GH-9085)
Currently configure.ac uses AC_RUN_IFELSE to determine the byte order of doubles, but this silently fails under cross compilation and Python doesn't do floats properly.

Instead, steal a macro from autoconf-archive which compiles code using magic doubles (which encode to ASCII) and grep for the representation in the binary.

RFC because this doesn't yet handle the weird ancient ARMv4 OABI 'mixed-endian' encoding properly. This encoding is ancient and I don't believe the union of "Python 3.8 users" and "OABI users" has anything in. Should the support for this just be dropped too? Alternatively, someone will need to find an OABI toolchain to verify the encoding of the magic double.

bpo-6721: Hold logging locks across fork() (GH-4071)
bpo-6721: When os.fork() was called while another thread holds a logging lock, the child process may deadlock when it tries to log. This fixes that by acquiring all logging locks before fork and releasing them afterwards.

A regression test that fails before this change is included.

Within the new unittest itself: There is a small _potential_ due to mixing of fork and a thread in the child process if the parent's thread happened to hold a non-reentrant library call lock (malloc?) when the os.fork() happens. buildbots and time will tell if this actually manifests itself in this test or not. :/ A functionality test that avoids that would be a challenge.

An alternate test that isn't trying to produce the deadlock itself but just checking that the release and acquire calls are made would be the next best alternative if so.

This implementation and unittest primarily came from @izbyshev (see the PR)

See also b89b52f284

This also removes the old manual p2cread, c2pwrite, and errwrite closing logic
as inheritable flags and _close_open_fds takes care of that properly today without special treatment.

This code is within child_exec() where it is the only thread so there is no
race condition between the dup and _Py_set_inheritable_async_safe call.

Pablo Galindo ec74d187f5 bpo-33613, test_semaphore_tracker_sigint: fix race condition (#7850)
Fail `test_semaphore_tracker_sigint` if no warnings are expected and one is received.

Fix race condition when the child receives SIGINT before it can register signal handlers for it.

The race condition occurs when the parent calls
`_semaphore_tracker.ensure_running()` (which in turn spawns the
semaphore_tracker using `_posixsubprocess.fork_exec`), the child
registers the signal handlers and the parent tries to kill the child.
What seem to happen is that in some slow systems, the parent sends the
signal to kill the child before the child protects against the signal.

* _PyCoreConfig_Read() now reads the locale encoding for the file
  system encoding.
* PyUnicode_EncodeFSDefault() and PyUnicode_DecodeFSDefaultAndSize()

bpo-34485, Windows: LC_CTYPE set to user preference (GH-8988)
On Windows, the LC_CTYPE is now set to the user preferred locale at
startup: _Py_SetLocaleFromEnv(LC_CTYPE) is now called during the
Python initialization. Previously, the LC_CTYPE locale was "C" at
startup, but changed when calling setlocale(LC_CTYPE, "") or
setlocale(LC_ALL, "").

pymain_read_conf() now also calls _Py_SetLocaleFromEnv(LC_CTYPE) to
behave as _Py_InitializeCore(). Moreover, it doesn't save/restore the
LC_ALL anymore.

On Windows, standard streams like sys.stdout now always use
surrogateescape error handler by default (ignore the locale).

bpo-34485: Enhance init_sys_streams() (GH-8978)
Python now gets the locale encoding with C code to initialize the encoding
of standard streams like sys.stdout. Moreover, the encoding is now
initialized to the Python codec name to get a normalized encoding name and
to ensure that the codec is loaded. The change avoids importing
_bootlocale and _locale modules at startup by default.

When the PYTHONIOENCODING environment variable only contains an encoding,
the error handler is now is now set explicitly to "strict".

Rename also get_default_standard_stream_error_handler() to
get_stdio_errors().

The current C implementations **crash** if the input includes a surrogate
Unicode code point, which is not possible to encode in UTF-8.

Important notes:

1. It is possible to pass a non-UTF-8 string as a separator to the
    `.isoformat()` methods.
2.  The pure-Python `datetime.fromisoformat()` implementation accepts
    strings with a surrogate as the separator.

In `datetime.fromisoformat()`, in the special case of non-UTF-8 separators,
this implementation will take a performance hit by making a copy of the
input string and replacing the separator with 'T'.

bpo-34384: Fix os.readlink() on Windows (GH-8740)
os.readlink() now accepts path-like and bytes objects on Windows.

implemented on Unix.

This commit also merges Unix and Windows implementations of
os.readlink() in one function and adds basic unit tests to increase
test coverage of the function.

bpo-33729: Fix issues with arguments parsing in hashlib. (GH-8346)
* help(hashlib) didn't work because of incorrect module name in blake2b and
  blake2s classes.
* Constructors blake2*(), sha3_*(), shake_*() and keccak_*() incorrectly
  accepted keyword argument "string" for binary data, but documented as
  accepting the "data" keyword argument. Now this parameter is positional-only.
* Keyword-only parameters in blake2b() and blake2s() were not documented as
  keyword-only.
* Default value for some parameters of blake2b() and blake2s() was None,
  which is not acceptable value.
* The length argument for shake_*.digest() was wrapped out to 32 bits.
* The argument for shake_128.digest() and shake_128.hexdigest() was not
  positional-only as intended.
* TypeError messages for incorrect arguments in all constructors sha3_*(),
  shake_*() and keccak_*() incorrectly referred to sha3_224.

Also made the following enhancements:

* More accurately specified input and result types for strings, bytes and
  bytes-like objects.
* Unified positional parameter names for update() and constructors.
* Improved formatting.

chason 48ed88a93b bpo-32663 Make SMTPUTF8SimTests run (#5314)
Enable and fix SMTPUTF8SimTests in test_smtplib.

The tests for SMTPUTF8SimTests in test_smtplib.py were not actually
being run because test_smtplib was still using the 'test_main' pattern,

Additionally, one of the tests needed to be moved to the non-UTF8 server
class because it relies on the server not being UTF-8 compatible (and it
had a bug in in).

Ammar Askar 96d1e69a12 bpo-29097: Forego fold detection on windows for low timestamp values (GH-2385)
On Windows, passing a negative value to local results in an OSError because localtime_s on Windows does not support negative timestamps. Unfortunately this means that fold detection for timestamps between 0 and max_fold_seconds will result in this OSError since we subtract max_fold_seconds from the timestamp to detect a fold. However, since we know there haven't been any folds in the interval [0, max_fold_seconds) in any timezone, we can hackily just forego fold detection for this time range on Windows.

Ensure the imp.load_source shim always returns bytes by reopening the file in

It's tempting to change imp.get_suffixes() to always return 'rb' as a mode, but
that breaks some stdlib tests and likely 3rdparty code, too.

bpo-32568: make select.epoll() and its docs consistent (#7840)
* `flags` is indeed deprecated, but there is a validation on its value for
  backwards compatibility reasons. This adds mention of this in the docs.
* The docs say that `sizehint` is deprecated and ignored, but it is still
  used when `epoll_create1()` is unavailable. This adds mention of this in
  the docs.
* `sizehint=-1` is acceptable again, and is replaced with `FD_SETSIZE-1`.
  This is needed to have a default value available at the Python level,
  since `FD_SETSIZE` is not exposed to Python. (see: bpo-31938)
* Reject `sizehint=0` since it is invalid to pass on to `epoll_create()`.

In some development setups it is inconvenient or impossible to write bytecode
caches to the code tree, but the bytecode caches are still useful. The
PYTHONPYCACHEPREFIX environment variable allows specifying an alternate
location for cached bytecode files, within which a directory tree mirroring the code
tree will be created. This cache tree is then used (for both reading and writing)
instead of the local `__pycache__` subdirectory within each source directory.

Exposed at runtime as sys.pycache_prefix (defaulting to None), and can
be set from the CLI as "-X pycache_prefix=path".

Steve Weber 2487f30d55 bpo-30167: Prevent site.main() exception if PYTHONSTARTUP is set. (GH-6731)
Before Python 3.6, os.path.abspath(None) used to report an AttributeError which was properly caught inside site.abs_paths, making it ignore __main__, one of sys.modules, which has __file__ and __cached__ set to None. With 3.6, os.path.abspath(None) raises TypeError instead which site.abs_path was not expecting. This resulted in an uncaught exception if a user had PYTHONSTARTUP set and the application called site.main() which a number of third-party programs do.

bpo-33812: Corrected astimezone for naive datetimes. (GH-7578)
A datetime object d is aware if d.tzinfo is not None and
d.tzinfo.utcoffset(d) does not return None. If d.tzinfo is None,
or if d.tzinfo is not None but d.tzinfo.utcoffset(d) returns None,
 d is naive.

This commit ensures that instances with non-None d.tzinfo, but
d.tzinfo.utcoffset(d) returning None are treated as naive.

In addition, C acceleration code will raise TypeError if
d.tzinfo.utcoffset(d) returns an object with the type other than
timedelta.

* Updated the documentation.

Assume that the term "naive" is defined elsewhere and remove the
not entirely correct clarification. Thanks, Tim.

Christian Tismer ea62ce7f4f bpo-33738: Fix macros which contradict PEP 384 (GH-7477)
During development of the limited API support for PySide,
we saw an error in a macro that accessed a type field.

This patch fixes the 7 errors in the Python headers.
Macros which were not written as capitals were implemented
as function.

To do the necessary analysis again, a script was included that
parses all headers and looks for "->tp_" in serctions which can
be reached with active limited API.

It is easily possible to call this script as a test.

bpo-33409: Clarify PEP 538/540 relationship (GH-7534)
While locale coercion and UTF-8 mode turned out to
be complementary ideas rather than competing ones,
it isn't immediately obvious why it's useful to
have both, or how they interact at runtime.

This updates both the Python 3.7 What's New doc
and the PYTHONCOERCECLOCALE and PYTHONUTF8
documentation in an attempt to clarify that
relationship:

- in the respective What's New sections, add a closing paragraph
  explaining which problem each one solves, and pointing to the
  other PEP's section for the specific aspects it relies on the other
  PEP to solve
- use "locale-aware mode" as a more descriptive term for the
  default non-UTF-8 mode
- improve wording conistenccy between the PYTHONCOERCECLOCALE
  and PYTHONUTF8 docs when they cover the same thing (mostly
  related to legacy locale detection and setting the standard
  stream error handler)
- improve the description of the locale coercion trigger conditions
  (including pointing out that setting LC_ALL turns off locale coercion)
- port the full description of the UTF-8 mode behaviour changes
  from PEP 540 into the PYTHONUTF8 documentation
- be explicit that PYTHONIOENCODING still overrides the settings
  for the standard streams
- mention concrete examples of things that do and don't get their
  text encoding assumptions adjusted by the two text encoding
  assumption override techniques

Elvis Pranskevichus e2b340ab41 bpo-32751: Wait for task cancellation in asyncio.wait_for() (GH-7216)
Currently, asyncio.wait_for(fut), upon reaching the timeout deadline,
cancels the future and returns immediately. This is problematic for
when *fut* is a Task, because it will be left running for an arbitrary
amount of time. This behavior is iself surprising and may lead to
related bugs such as the one described in bpo-33638:

    condition = asyncio.Condition()
    async with condition:
        await asyncio.wait_for(condition.wait(), timeout=0.5)

Currently, instead of raising a TimeoutError, the above code will fail
with `RuntimeError: cannot wait on un-acquired lock`, because
`__aexit__` is reached _before_ `condition.wait()` finishes its
cancellation and re-acquires the condition lock.

To resolve this, make `wait_for` await for the task cancellation.
The tradeoff here is that the `timeout` promise may be broken if the
task decides to handle its cancellation in a slow way. This represents
a behavior change and should probably not be back-patched to 3.6 and
earlier.

client cert auth are now handled after the initialy handshake. Tests now
either send/recv data to trigger session and client certs. Or tests
ignore ConnectionResetError / BrokenPipeError on the server side to
handle clients that force-close the socket fd.

To test TLS 1.3, OpenSSL 1.1.1-pre7-dev (git master + OpenSSL PR
https://github.com/openssl/openssl/pull/6340) is required.

CtrlZvi 4151061855 bpo-26819: Prevent proactor double read on resume (#6921)
The proactor event loop has a race condition when reading with
pausing/resuming. `resume_reading()` unconditionally schedules the read
function to read from the current future. If `resume_reading()` was
called before the previously scheduled done callback fires, this results
in two attempts to get the data from the most recent read and an
assertion failure. This commit tracks whether or not `resume_reading`
needs to reschedule the callback to restart the loop, preventing a
second attempt to read the data.

Instead of passing configure args such as --without-gcc or --with-icc,

passing CC (or CPP or CXX depending).

This allows configure to find the correct compiler instead of having to
be explicitly told. It also more correctly builds on both macOS and
FreeBSD since the system compiler is used by default (cc)
