[3.7] bpo-33169: Remove values of `None` from sys.path_importer_cache when invalidating caches (GH-6402) (GH-6403)
An entry of None in sys.path_importer_cache represents a negative/missing finder for a path, so clearing it out makes sense.

bpo-33053: -m now adds *starting* directory to sys.path (GH-6231) (#6236)
Historically, -m added the empty string as sys.path
zero, meaning it resolved imports against the current
working directory, the same way -c and the interactive
prompt do.

This changes the sys.path initialisation to add the
*starting* working directory as sys.path[0] instead,
such that changes to the working directory while the
program is running will have no effect on imports
when using the -m switch.

Miss Islington (bot) 56cce1ca84 [3.7] bpo-33021: Release the GIL during fstat() calls (GH-6019) (GH-6159)
fstat may block for long time if the file descriptor is on a
non-responsive NFS server, hanging all threads. Most fstat() calls are
handled by _Py_fstat(), releasing the GIL internally, but but
_Py_fstat_noraise() does not release the GIL, and most calls release the
GIL explicitly around it.

This patch fixes last 2 calls to _Py_fstat_no_raise(), avoiding hangs
when calling:
- mmap.mmap()
- os.urandom()
- random.seed()

The CPython runtime assumes that there is a one-to-one relationship (for a given interpreter) between PyThreadState and OS threads. Sending and receiving on a channel in the same interpreter was causing crashes because of this (specifically due to a check in PyThreadState_Swap()). The solution is to not switch threads if the interpreter is the same.

Fix a rare but potential pre-exec child process deadlock in subprocess on POSIX systems when marking file descriptors inheritable on exec in the child process. This bug appears to have been introduced in 3.4 with the inheritable file descriptors support.

This also changes Python/fileutils.c `set_inheritable` to use the "slow" two `fcntl` syscall path instead of the "fast" single `ioctl` syscall path when asked to be async signal safe (by way of being asked not to raise exceptions). `ioctl` is not a POSIX async-signal-safe approved function.

Nathaniel J. Smith dba976b8a2 bpo-32591: fix abort in _PyErr_WarnUnawaitedCoroutine during shutdown (#5337)
When an unawaited coroutine is collected very late in shutdown --
like, during the final GC at the end of PyImport_Cleanup -- then it
was triggering an interpreter abort, because we'd try to look up the
"warnings" module and not only was it missing (we were prepared for
that), but the entire module system was missing (which we were not
prepared for).

I've tried to fix this at the source, by making the utility function
get_warnings_attr robust against this in general. Note that it already
has the convention that it can return NULL without setting an error,
which is how it signals that the attribute it was asked to fetch is
missing, and that all callers already check for NULL returns.

There's a similar check for being late in shutdown at the top of
warn_explicit, which might be unnecessary after this fix, but I'm not
sure so I'm going to leave it.

Third party projects may wish to hide their own internal machinery in
order to present more comprehensible tracebacks to end users

Previously such projects have had to rely on ctypes to do so:

This provides a Python level API for creating and modifying real

bpo-32030: Add _Py_FindEnvConfigValue() (#4963)
Add a new _Py_FindEnvConfigValue() function: code shared between
Windows and Unix implementations of _PyPathConfig_Calculate() to read
the pyenv.cfg file.

_Py_FindEnvConfigValue() now uses _Py_DecodeUTF8_surrogateescape()
instead of using a Python Unicode string, the Python API must not be
used early during Python initialization. Same change in Unix
search_for_exec_prefix(): use _Py_DecodeUTF8_surrogateescape().

Cleanup also encode_current_locale(): PyMem_RawFree/PyMem_Free can be
called with NULL.

closes bpo-31650: PEP 552 (Deterministic pycs) implementation (#4575)
Python now supports checking bytecode cache up-to-dateness with a hash of the
source contents rather than volatile source metadata. See the PEP for details.

While a fairly straightforward idea, quite a lot of code had to be modified due
to the pervasiveness of pyc implementation details in the codebase. Changes in
this commit include:

- The core changes to importlib to understand how to read, validate, and
  regenerate hash-based pycs.

- Support for generating hash-based pycs in py_compile and compileall.

- Modifications to our siphash implementation to support passing a custom
  key. We then expose it to importlib through _imp.

- Updates to all places in the interpreter, standard library, and tests that
  manually generate or parse pyc files to grok the new format.

- Support in the interpreter command line code for long options like
  --check-hash-based-pycs.

- Tests and documentation for all of the above.

_PyPathConfig_Init() now also initialize home and program_name:

* Rename existing _PyPathConfig_Init() to _PyPathConfig_Calculate().
  Add a new _PyPathConfig_Init() function in pathconfig.c which
  handles the _Py_path_config variable and call
  _PyPathConfig_Calculate().
* Add home and program_name fields to _PyPathConfig.home
* _PyPathConfig_Init() now initialize home and program_name
  from main_config
* Py_SetProgramName(), Py_SetPythonHome() and Py_GetPythonHome() now
  calls Py_FatalError() on failure, instead of silently ignoring
  failures.
* config_init_home() now gets directly _Py_path_config.home to only
  get the value set by Py_SetPythonHome(), or NULL if
  Py_SetPythonHome() was not called.
* config_get_program_name() now gets directly
  _Py_path_config.program_name to only get the value set by
  Py_SetProgramName(), or NULL if Py_SetProgramName() was not called.
* pymain_init_python() doesn't call Py_SetProgramName() anymore,
  _PyPathConfig_Init() now always sets the program name
* Call _PyMainInterpreterConfig_Read() in
  pymain_parse_cmdline_envvars_impl() to control the memory allocator
* C API documentation: it's no more safe to call Py_GetProgramName()
  before Py_Initialize().

bpo-32030: Don't call _PyPathConfig_Fini() in Py_FinalizeEx() (#4667)
Changes:

* _PyPathConfig_Fini() cannot be called in Py_FinalizeEx().
  Py_Initialize() and Py_Finalize() can be called multiple times, but
  it must not "forget" parameters set by Py_SetProgramName(),
  Py_SetPath() or Py_SetPythonHome(), whereas _PyPathConfig_Fini()
  clear all these parameters.
* config_get_program_name() and calculate_program_full_path() now
  also decode paths using Py_DecodeLocale() to use the
  surrogateescape error handler, rather than decoding using
  mbstowcs() which is strict.
* Change _Py_CheckPython3() prototype: () => (void)
* Truncate a few lines which were too long

Serhiy Storchaka 73a7e9b10b bpo-10544: Deprecate "yield" in comprehensions and generator expressions. (GH-4579)
The current behaviour of yield expressions inside comprehensions and
generator expressions is essentially an accident of implementation - it
arises implicitly from the way the compiler handles yield expressions inside
nested functions and generators.

Since the current behaviour wasn't deliberately designed, and is inherently
confusing, we're deprecating it, with no current plans to reintroduce it.
Instead, our advice will be to use a named nested generator definition
for cases where this behaviour is desired.

* Document default memory allocators in C API documentation
* _Py_InitializeCore() now fails with a fatal user error if

bpo-32030: Enhance Py_Main() (#4412)
Parse more env vars in Py_Main():

* Add more options to _PyCoreConfig:

  * faulthandler
  * tracemalloc
  * importtime

* Move code to parse environment variables from _Py_InitializeCore()
  to Py_Main(). This change fixes a regression from Python 3.6:
  PYTHONUNBUFFERED is now read before calling pymain_init_stdio().
* _PyFaulthandler_Init() and _PyTraceMalloc_Init() now take an
  argument to decide if the module has to be enabled at startup.
* tracemalloc_start() is now responsible to check the maximum number
  of frames.

Other changes:

* Cleanup Py_Main():

  * Rename some pymain_xxx() subfunctions
  * Add pymain_run_python() subfunction

* Cleanup Py_NewInterpreter()
* _PyInterpreterState_Enable() now reports failure
* init_hash_secret() now considers pyurandom() failure as an "user
  error": don't fail with abort().
* pymain_optlist_append() and pymain_strdup() now sets err on memory
  allocation failure.

bpo-32030: Split Py_Main() into subfunctions (#4399)
* Don't use "Python runtime" anymore to parse command line options or
  to get environment variables: pymain_init() is now a strict
  separation.
* Use an error message rather than "crashing" directly with
  Py_FatalError(). Limit the number of calls to Py_FatalError(). It
  prepares the code to handle errors more nicely later.
* Warnings options (-W, PYTHONWARNINGS) and "XOptions" (-X) are now
  only added to the sys module once Python core is properly
  initialized.
* _PyMain is now the well identified owner of some important strings
  like: warnings options, XOptions, and the "program name". The
  program name string is now properly freed at exit.
  pymain_free() is now responsible to free the "command" string.
* Rename most methods in Modules/main.c to use a "pymain_" prefix to
  avoid conflits and ease debug.
* Replace _Py_CommandLineDetails_INIT with memset(0)
* Reorder a lot of code to fix the initialization ordering. For
  example, initializing standard streams now comes before parsing
  PYTHONWARNINGS.
* Py_Main() now handles errors when adding warnings options and
  XOptions.
* Add _PyMem_GetDefaultRawAllocator() private function.
* Cleanup _PyMem_Initialize(): remove useless global constants: move
  them into _PyMem_Initialize().
* Call _PyRuntime_Initialize() as soon as possible:
  _PyRuntime_Initialize() now returns an error message on failure.
* Add _PyInitError structure and following macros:

  * _Py_INIT_OK()
  * _Py_INIT_ERR(msg)
  * _Py_INIT_USER_ERR(msg): "user" error, don't abort() in that case
  * _Py_INIT_FAILED(err)
