  This contains a number of things:

  1) Improve the documentation of the SSL module, with a fuller
     explanation of certificate usage, another reference, proper
     formatting of this and that.

  2) Fix Windows bug in ssl.py, and general bug in sslsocket.close().
     Remove some unused code from ssl.py. Allow accept() to be called on
     sslsocket sockets.

  3) Use try-except-else in import of ssl in socket.py. Deprecate use of
     socket.ssl().

  4) Remove use of socket.ssl() in every library module, except for
     test_socket_ssl.py and test_ssl.py.

  Somewhat-preliminary slice-object and extended slicing support for ctypes.
  The exact behaviour of omitted and negative indices for the Pointer type may
  need a closer look (especially as it's subtly different from simple slices)

Guido van Rossum fb67be2f6b Three patches from issue #1047, by Amaury Forgeot d'Arc:
1/ getargs.diff adds the 'Z' and 'Z#' format specifiers for
PyArg_ParseTuple. They mimic z and z# for unicode strings, by accepting
a Unicode or None (in which case the Py_UNICODE* pointer is set to
NULL). With doc and tests.

2/ subprocess.diff converts file PC/_subprocess.c to unicode. We use the
Unicode version of the win32 api (and Z conversion from previous patch)

3/ stdout.diff: sys.stdout must not convert the line endings, Windows
already does it.
Without this patch, when redirecting the output of python, the file
contains \r\r\n for each line. (test_subprocess did catch this)

However, I (GvR) removed the change to _fileio.c (included in the
patches) that prevents closing file descripors < 3 from being closed;
I think that needs to be solved in a different way.

Guido van Rossum 7d1df6c9b1 Add PyUnicode_AsStringAndSize(), which is like PyUnicode_AsString() but
has an extra (optional) output parameter through which it returns the size.
Use this in a few places where I used PyUnicode_AsString() + strlen(),
and in one new place (which fixes test_pep263).
2007-08-29 13:53:23 +00:00
Guido van Rossum fa9a121952 "Fix" a few places that were using PyObject_AsCharBuffer() to convert a string
(PyUnicode these days) to a char* + length. The fix consists of calling
PyUnicode_AsString() and strlen(). This is not ideal, but AsCharBuffer()
is definitely not the API to use.

  Here's a patch which addresses this. It also fixes the indentation in
  PySSL_SetError, bringing it into line with PEP 7, fixes a compile warning

  Improve extended slicing support in builtin types and classes. Specifically:

   - Specialcase extended slices that amount to a shallow copy the same way as
     is done for simple slices, in the tuple, string and unicode case.

   - Specialcase step-1 extended slices to optimize the common case for all
     involved types.

   - For lists, allow extended slice assignment of differing lengths as long
     as the step is 1. (Previously, 'l[:2:1] = []' failed even though
     'l[:2] = []' and 'l[:2:None] = []' do not.)

   - Implement extended slicing for buffer, array, structseq, mmap and
     UserString.UserString.

   - Implement slice-object support (but not non-step-1 slice assignment) for
     UserString.MutableString.

   - Add tests for all new functionality.

Issue1028
2007-08-27 01:55:21 +00:00
Neal Norwitz efaf629026 Use unicode (hope it's right, I can't test it) 2007-08-26 21:43:00 +00:00
Guido van Rossum a43cae3a07 Pass PyBUF_CHARACTER instead of PyBUF_SIMPLE to PyObject_GetBuffer().
This makes the failing tests (test_unicodedata and, on OSX, test_hashlib) pass.

XXX However, I'm not sure that this is the right thing to do;
this behavior means that Unicode strings are automatically hashed as their
UTF-8 encoding. Is that what we want?

Neal Norwitz faa54a3929 Code review of the new buffer protocol. Mostly add questions that should
be answered with the comments removed.

There are many places that require checks when doing arithmetic for memory
sizes when allocating memory. Otherwise, overflow is possible with
a subsequent crash.

Fix SF #1777057 which was a result of not initializing the new BufferError
properly. Had to update the test for exceptions for BufferError too.

Walter Dörwald 41980caf64 Apply SF patch #1775604: This adds three new codecs (utf-32, utf-32-le and
ut-32-be). On narrow builds the codecs combine surrogate pairs in the unicode
object into one codepoint on encoding and create surrogate pairs for
codepoints outside the BMP on decoding. Lone surrogates are passed through
unchanged in all cases.

Backport to the trunk will follow.

Neal Norwitz aea70e03c4 Fix the refleak in strftime when converting a %Z with a user defined tzinfo.
I inverted some of the conditionals to reduce indent levels. Hopefully
this makes it a little easier to read.

This code caused the leak:

    class FixedOffset(datetime.tzinfo):
        def tzname(self, dt): return "UTC"

    datetime.time(12, 47, tzinfo=FixedOffset()).strftime('%Z')

This code is very tricky and I'm not positive it works. However,
it neither crashes nor leaks.

Thomas Heller 2fb5ac745b Fix the ctypes tests. Patch from Victor Stinner. He writes:
The problem is that ctypes c_char (and c_char_p) creates unicode string
instead of byte string. I attached a proposition (patch) to change this
behaviour (use bytes for c_char).

So in next example, it will display 'bytes' and not 'str':
  from ctypes import c_buffer, c_char
  buf = c_buffer("abcdef")
  print (type(buf[0]))

Other behaviour changes:
 - repr(c_char) adds a "b"
   eg. repr(c_char('x')) is "c_char(b'x')" instead of "c_char('x')"
 - bytes is mutable whereas str is not:
   this may break some modules based on ctypes

    Moved all of the capture_server socket setup code into the try block

    Avoid exception if there's a stray directory inside a Maildir folder.

    The Maildir specification doesn't seem to say anything about this

    ignores directories in the cur/, new/, tmp/ folders.

  Dict comprehensions. Still needs doc changes (like many python-3000 features
  ;-). It generates bytecode similar to:

  x = {}
  for k, v in (generator here):
    x[k] = v

  except there is no tuple-packing and -unpacking involved. Trivial
  measurement suggests it's significantly faster than dict(generator here) (in
  the order of 2 to 3 times as fast) but I have not done extensive
  measurements.
