The bulk of this patch was generated automatically with:

    for name in \
        PyObject_Vectorcall \
        Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VECTORCALL \
        PyObject_VectorcallMethod \
        PyVectorcall_Function \
        PyObject_CallOneArg \
        PyObject_CallMethodNoArgs \
        PyObject_CallMethodOneArg \
    ;
    do
        echo $name
        git grep -lwz _$name | xargs -0 sed -i "s/\b_$name\b/$name/g"
    done

    old=_PyObject_FastCallDict
    new=PyObject_VectorcallDict
    git grep -lwz $old | xargs -0 sed -i "s/\b$old\b/$new/g"

and then cleaned up:

- Revert changes to in docs & news
- Revert changes to backcompat defines in headers

Jeroen Demeyer bf17d41826 bpo-37645: add new function _PyObject_FunctionStr() (GH-14890)
Additional note: the `method_check_args` function in `Objects/descrobject.c` is written in such a way that it applies to all kinds of descriptors. In particular, a future re-implementation of `wrapper_descriptor` could use that code.

Petr Viktorin f958377b67 bpo-37499: Test various C calling conventions (GH-15776)
Add functions with various calling conventions to `_testcapi`, expose them as module-level functions, bound methods, class methods, and static methods, and test calling them and introspecting them through GDB.

When dict subclass overrides order (`__iter__()`, `keys()`, and `items()`), `dict(o)`
should use it instead of dict ordering.

Sylvain 7445381c60 bpo-30600: Fix error messages (condition order in Argument Clinic) (#2051)
The function '_PyArg_ParseStack()' and
'_PyArg_UnpackStack' were failing (with error
"XXX() takes Y argument (Z given)") before
the function '_PyArg_NoStackKeywords()' was called.
Thus, the latter did not raise its more meaningful
error : "XXX() takes no keyword arguments".

Zachary Ware 38c707e7e0 Issue #21741: Update 147 test modules to use test discovery.
I have compared output between pre- and post-patch runs of these tests
to make sure there's nothing missing and nothing broken, on both
Windows and Linux. The only differences I found were actually tests
that were previously *not* run.

Guido van Rossum e2b70bcf74 Get rid of dict.has_key(). Boy this has a lot of repercussions!
Not all code has been fixed yet; this is just a checkpoint...
The C API still has PyDict_HasKey() and _HasKeyString(); not sure
if I want to change those just yet.

Raymond Hettinger 31017aed36 SF #904720: dict.update should take a 2-tuple sequence like dict.__init_

The update() method for mappings now accepts all the same argument forms
as the dict() constructor. This includes item lists and/or keyword
arguments.

Walter Dörwald 21d3a32b99 Combine the functionality of test_support.run_unittest()
and test_support.run_classtests() into run_unittest()
and use it wherever possible.

Also don't use "from test.test_support import ...", but
"from test import test_support" in a few spots.

From SF patch #662807.

Barry Warsaw 04f357cffe Get rid of relative imports in all unittests. Now anything that
imports e.g. test_support must do so using an absolute package name
such as "import test.test_support" or "from test import test_support".

This also updates the README in Lib/test, and gets rid of the
duplicate data dirctory in Lib/test/data (replaced by
Lib/email/test/data).

Now Tim and Jack can have at it. :)
