gh-106320: Create pycore_modsupport.h header file (#106355)
Remove the following functions from the C API, move them to the internal C
API: add a new pycore_modsupport.h internal header file:

* PyModule_CreateInitialized()
* _PyArg_NoKwnames()
* _Py_VaBuildStack()

No longer export these functions.

gh-82012: Deprecate bitwise inversion (~) of bool (#103487)
The bitwise inversion operator on bool returns the bitwise inversion of the
underlying int value; i.e. `~True == -2` such that `bool(~True) == True`.

It's a common pitfall that users mistake `~` as negation operator and actually
want `not`. Supporting `~` is an artifact of bool inheriting from int. Since there
is no real use-case for the current behavior, let's deprecate `~` on bool and
later raise an error. This removes a potential source errors for users.

Full reasoning: https://github.com/python/cpython/issues/82012#issuecomment-1258705971

gh-84436: Implement Immortal Objects (gh-19474)
This is the implementation of PEP683

Motivation:

The PR introduces the ability to immortalize instances in CPython which bypasses reference counting. Tagging objects as immortal allows up to skip certain operations when we know that the object will be around for the entire execution of the runtime.

Note that this by itself will bring a performance regression to the runtime due to the extra reference count checks. However, this brings the ability of having truly immutable objects that are useful in other contexts such as immutable data sharing between sub-interpreters.

GH-101291: Rearrange the size bits in PyLongObject (GH-102464)
* Eliminate all remaining uses of Py_SIZE and Py_SET_SIZE on PyLongObject, adding asserts.

* Change layout of size/sign bits in longobject to support future addition of immortal ints and tagged medium ints.

* Add functions to hide some internals of long object, and for setting sign and digit count.

* Replace uses of IS_MEDIUM_VALUE macro with _PyLong_IsCompact().

gh-101266: Fix __sizeof__ for subclasses of int (#101394)
Fix the behaviour of the `__sizeof__` method (and hence the results returned by `sys.getsizeof`) for subclasses of `int`. Previously, `int` subclasses gave identical results to the `int` base class, ignoring the presence of the instance dictionary.

PyString_Concat() and PyString_ConcatAndDel() (the name PyUnicode_Concat()

Change PyObject_Repr() to always return a unicode object.

Update all repr implementations to return unicode objects.

Add a function PyObject_ReprStr8() that calls PyObject_Repr() and converts
the result to an 8bit string.

Use PyObject_ReprStr8() where using PyObject_Repr() can't be done
straightforward.

Guido van Rossum ddefaf31b3 Merged the int/long unification branch, by very crude means (sorry Thomas!).
I banged on the code (beyond what's in that branch) to make fewer tests fail;
the only tests that fail now are:
  test_descr -- can't pickle ints?!
  test_pickletools -- ???
  test_socket -- See python.org/sf/1619659
  test_sqlite -- ???
I'll deal with those later.

Thomas Wouters 49fd7fa443 Merge p3yk branch with the trunk up to revision 45595. This breaks a fair
number of tests, all because of the codecs/_multibytecodecs issue described
here (it's not a Py3K issue, just something Py3K discovers):
http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2006-April/064051.html

Hye-Shik Chang promised to look for a fix, so no need to fix it here. The
tests that are expected to break are:

test_codecencodings_cn
test_codecencodings_hk
test_codecencodings_jp
test_codecencodings_kr
test_codecencodings_tw
test_codecs
test_multibytecodec

This merge fixes an actual test failure (test_weakref) in this branch,
though, so I believe merging is the right thing to do anyway.

Martin v. Löwis 15e62742fa Revert backwards-incompatible const changes. 2006-02-27 16:46:16 +00:00
Jeremy Hylton af68c874a6 Add const to several API functions that take char *.
In C++, it's an error to pass a string literal to a char* function
without a const_cast(). Rather than require every C++ extension
module to put a cast around string literals, fix the API to state the
const-ness.

I focused on parts of the API where people usually pass literals:
PyArg_ParseTuple() and friends, Py_BuildValue(), PyMethodDef, the type
slots, etc. Predictably, there were a large set of functions that
needed to be fixed as a result of these changes. The most pervasive
change was to make the keyword args list passed to
PyArg_ParseTupleAndKewords() to be a const char *kwlist[].

One cast was required as a result of the changes: A type object
mallocs the memory for its tp_doc slot and later frees it.
PyTypeObject says that tp_doc is const char *; but if the type was
created by type_new(), we know it is safe to cast to char *.

Guido van Rossum aa86e35c52 - bool() called without arguments now returns False rather than
raising an exception. This is consistent with calling the
  constructors for the other builtin types -- called without argument
  they all return the false value of that type. (SF patch #724135)
