Issue #1580: use short float repr where possible.
- incorporate and adapt David Gay's dtoa and strtod into the Python core - on platforms where we can use Gay's code (almost all!), repr(float) is based on the shortest sequence of decimal digits that rounds correctly. - add sys.float_repr_style attribute to indicate whether we're using Gay's code or not - add autoconf magic to detect and enable SSE2 instructions on x86/gcc - slight change to repr and str: repr switches to exponential notation at 1e16 instead of 1e17, str switches at 1e11 instead of 1e12 |

merge the io-c branch: C implementation of the io module
The main io module now uses the C implementation. The Python one still exists in Lib/_pyio.py for ease of testing new features and usefulness to other implementers. The rewrite was done by Antoine Pitrou and Amaury Forgeot d'Arc. I was slightly helpful at the end. :) Following are the log messages from the io-c branch: Merged revisions 68683-68685,68687-68689,68693,68704,68741-68743,68745,68747,68752-68754,68756,68758,68812,68816-68817,68820-68822,68824-68825,68828,68876-68877,69037,69044,69104,69115,69194,69626-69629,69636,69638,69641-69642,69644-69654,69656-69661,69671,69677,69812-69815,69817,69827-69830,69839,69841-69845,69848,69850,69852,69854,69860,69865-69866,69868,69872-69873,69885,69888,69891-69893,69911,69913-69916,69963,70033,70035,70038,70041-70048,70067-70070,70075,70112,70133,70135,70140 via svnmerge from svn+ssh://pythondev@svn.python.org/python/branches/io-c ........ r68683 | antoine.pitrou | 2009-01-17 17:13:48 -0600 (Sat, 17 Jan 2009) | 3 lines Merge in changes from the io-c sandbox. The new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no circumstances should tests be hard coding ports! test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used. Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect). The following tests were updated to following the new conventions: test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib, test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver, test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl. It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to run in parallel without issue. ........ r62235 | gregory.p.smith | 2008-04-09 02:25:17 +0200 (Wed, 09 Apr 2008) | 3 lines Fix zlib crash from zlib.decompressobj().flush(val) when val was not positive. The existing version had a number of flaws, namely, it didn't work for x64 and it wasn't precise about which python_d.exe it was killing -- it just killed the first one it came across that happened to have 'pcbuild\python_d.exe' or 'build\python_d.exe' in it's path. The new version has been rewritten from the ground up and now lives in PCbuild, instead of Tools\buildbot, and it has also been incorporated into the Visual Studio solution (pcbuild.sln) as 'kill_python'. The solution has also been altered such that kill_python is called where necessary in the build process in order to prevent any linking errors due to open file locks. In lieu of this, all of the existing bits and pieces in Tools\buildbot that called out to kill_python at various points have also been removed as they are now obsolete. Tested on both Win32 and x64. This file now accurately describes the build process as is; however, there's still a lot of room for improvement, especially with regards to how we build Tcl/Tk, Tix, and OpenSSL. Introduce two new .vcproj files, _bsddb44.vcproj and sqlite3.vcproj, which replace the previous pre-link event scripts for _bsddb and _sqlite3 respectively. The new project files inherit from our property files as if they were any other Python module. This has numerous benefits. First, the components get built with exactly the same compiler flags and settings as the rest of Python. Second, it makes it much easier to debug problems in the external components when they're part of the build system. Third, they'll benefit from profile guided optimisation in the release builds, just like the rest of Python core. I've also introduced a slightly new pattern for managing externals in subversion. New components get checked in as <name>-<version>.x, where <version> matches the exact vendor version string. After the initial import of the external component, the .x is tagged as .0 (i.e. tcl-8.4.18.x -> tcl-8.4.18.0). Some components may not need any tweaking, whereas there are others that might (tcl/tk fall into this bucket). In that case, the relevant modifications are made to the .x branch, which will be subsequently tagged as .1 (and then n+1 going forward) when they build successfully and all tests pass. Buildbots will be converted to rely on these explicit tags only, which makes it easy for us to switch them over to a new version as and when required. (Simple change to external(-amd64).bat: if we've bumped tcl to 8.4.18.1, change the .bat to rmdir 8.4.18.0 if it exists and check out a new .1 copy.) ........ r61614 | trent.nelson | 2008-03-19 08:56:39 +0100 (Mi, 19 Mär 2008) | 1 line Remove extraneous apostrophe and semi-colon from AdditionalIncludeDirectories. ........ r61615 | georg.brandl | 2008-03-19 08:56:40 +0100 (Mi, 19 Mär 2008) | 2 lines Remove footnote from versionchanged as it upsets LaTeX. ........ r61616 | georg.brandl | 2008-03-19 08:57:57 +0100 (Mi, 19 Mär 2008) | 2 lines Another one. ........ r61618 | trent.nelson | 2008-03-19 09:06:03 +0100 (Mi, 19 Mär 2008) | 1 line Fix the tcl-8.4.18.1 path and make sure we cd into the right directory when building tcl/tk. ........ r61621 | trent.nelson | 2008-03-19 10:23:08 +0100 (Mi, 19 Mär 2008) | 1 line Lets have another try at getting the Windows buildbots in a consistent state before rebuilding using the new process. ........ r61622 | eric.smith | 2008-03-19 13:09:55 +0100 (Mi, 19 Mär 2008) | 2 lines Use test.test_support.captured_stdout instead of a custom contextmanager. On Win64, linking the python dll currently fails with 'unresolved
external symbol PyObject_Unicode'. Building _ssl than hangs the build server because starting python.exe displayes a message box that 'Python30.dll' cannot be found. Temporary (?) solution: Look for existance of python30.dll and fail the _ssl build when it is missing. |

I've created three bat files based on the howto http://wiki.python.org/moin/Building_Python_with_the_free_MS_C_Toolkit
I figured out that the files may suite other developers. The files take care of most problems and makes building Python on Windows easier. Simply double click on build_env.bat to open a shell and type build. |
