Christian Heimes	a37d4c693a	Removed PyInt_GetMax and sys.maxint ... I replaced sys.maxint with sys.maxsize in Lib/*.py. Does anybody see a problem with the change on Win 64bit platforms? Guido van Rossum	98297ee781	Merging the py3k-pep3137 branch back into the py3k branch. ... No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137 branch. The most obvious changes: - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level); - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level); - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible. I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type. The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more bytes-like. I had to fix a few tests and modules beyond what Christian did, and invent a few conventions. E.g. in elementtree, I chose to write/return Unicode strings whe no encoding is given, but bytes when an explicit encoding is given. Building python requires that setup.py and distutils and everything they use is free of map() and filter() calls. Beyond this, I only fixed the tests in test_builtin.py. Others, please help fixing the remaining tests that are now broken! The fixes are usually simple: a. map(None, X) -> list(X) b. map(F, X) -> list(map(F, X)) c. map(lambda x: F(x), X) -> [F(x) for x in X] d. filter(F, X) -> list(filter(F, X)) e. filter(lambda x: P(x), X) -> [x for x in X if P(x)] Someone, please also contribute a fixer for 2to3 to do this. It can leave map()/filter() calls alone that are already inside a list() or sorted() call or for-loop. We add some new rules that are required for preserving internal invariants of types. 1. If type (or a subclass of type) appears in bases, it must appear before any non-type bases. The TarInfo class now contains all necessary logic to process and create tar header data which has been moved there from the TarFile class. The fromtarfile() method was added. The new path and linkpath properties are aliases for the name and linkname attributes in correspondence to the pax naming scheme. The TarFile constructor and classmethods now accept a number of keyword arguments which could only be set as attributes before (e.g. dereference, ignore_zeros). The encoding and pax_headers arguments were added for pax support. There is a new tarinfo keyword argument that allows using subclassed TarInfo objects in TarFile. The boolean TarFile.posix attribute is deprecated, because now three tar formats are supported. Instead, the desired format for writing is specified using the constants USTAR_FORMAT, GNU_FORMAT and PAX_FORMAT as the format keyword argument. This change affects TarInfo.tobuf() as well. The test suite has been heavily reorganized and partially rewritten. A new testtar.tar was added that contains sample data in many formats from 4 different tar programs. Some bugs and quirks that also have been fixed: Directory names do no longer have a trailing slash in TarInfo.name or TarFile.getnames(). Adding the same file twice does not create a hardlink file member. The TarFile constructor does no longer need a name argument. Guido van Rossum	cc2b016125	- PEP 3106: dict.iterkeys(), .iteritems(), .itervalues() are now gone; ... and .keys(), .items(), .values() return dict views. The dict views aren't fully functional yet; in particular, they can't be compared to sets yet. but they are useful as "iterator wells". There are still 27 failing unit tests; I expect that many of these have fairly trivial fixes, but there are so many, I could use help.	2007-02-11 06:12:03 +00:00

There's one major and one minor category still unfixed: doctests are the major category (and I hope to be able to augment the refactoring tool to refactor bona fide doctests soon); other code generating print statements in strings is the minor category. I banged on the code (beyond what's in that branch) to make fewer tests fail; the only tests that fail now are: test_descr -- can't pickle ints?! test_pickletools -- ??? test_socket -- See python.org/sf/1619659 test_sqlite -- ???
