* Replaces the internals of the subprocess module from fork through exec on
POSIX systems with a C extension module. This is required in order for the subprocess module to be made thread safe. The pure python implementation is retained so that it can continue to be used if for some reason the _posixsubprocess extension module is not available. The unittest executes tests on both code paths to guarantee compatibility. * Moves PyLong_FromPid and PyLong_AsPid from posixmodule.c into longobject.h. This prevents other threads from having that lock while the fork happens, and is the recommended way of dealing with such issues. There are two other locks we care about, the GIL and the Thread Local Storage lock. The GIL is obviously held when calling Python functions like os.fork(), and the TLS lock is explicitly reallocated instead, while also deleting now-orphaned TLS data. This only fixes calls to os.fork(), not extension modules or embedding programs calling C's fork() directly. Solving that requires a new set of API functions, and possibly a rewrite of the Python/thread_*.c mess. Add a warning explaining the problem to the documentation in the mean time. This also changes behaviour a little on AIX. Before, AIX (but only AIX) was getting the import lock reallocated, seemingly to avoid this very same problem. This is not the right approach, because the import lock is a re-entrant one, and reallocating would do the wrong thing when forking while holding the import lock. Will backport to 2.6, minus the tiny AIX behaviour change. ........ |

PyUnicode_AsStringAndSize -> _PyUnicode_AsStringAndSize to mark them for interpreter internal use only. We'll have to rework these APIs or create new ones for the purpose of accessing the UTF-8 representation of Unicode objects for 3.1. |

Merging the py3k-pep3137 branch back into the py3k branch.
No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137 branch. The most obvious changes: - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level); - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level); - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible. I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type. The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list. |

Changes to make __file__ a proper Unicode object, using the default filesystem encoding. This is a bit tricky because the default filesystem encoding isn't set by the time we import the first modules; at that point we fudge things a bit. This is okay since __file__ isn't really used much except for error reporting. Tested on OSX and Linux only so far. |

Fix problems in x64 build that were discovered by the testsuite:
- Reenable modules on x64 that had been disabled aeons ago for Itanium.
- Cleared up confusion about compilers for 64 bit windows. There is only Itanium and x64. Added macros MS_WINI64 and MS_WINX64 for those rare cases where it matters, such as the disabling of modules above.
- Set target platform (_WIN32_WINNT and WINVER) to 0x0501 (XP) for x64, and 0x0400 (NT 4.0) otherwise, which are the targeted minimum platforms.
- Fixed thread_nt.h. The emulated InterlockedCompareExchange function didn?\194?\180t work on x64, probaby due to the lack of a "volatile" specifier. Anyway, win95 is no longer a target platform.
- Itertools module used wrong constant to check for overflow in count()
- PyInt_AsSsize_t couldn't deal with attribute error when accessing the __long__ member.
- PyLong_FromSsize_t() incorrectly specified that the operand were unsigned.
With these changes, the x64 passes the testsuite, for those modules present.

We add some new rules that are required for preserving internal invariants of types. 1. If type (or a subclass of type) appears in bases, it must appear before any non-type bases. The TarInfo class now contains all necessary logic to process and create tar header data which has been moved there from the TarFile class. The fromtarfile() method was added. The new path and linkpath properties are aliases for the name and linkname attributes in correspondence to the pax naming scheme. The TarFile constructor and classmethods now accept a number of keyword arguments which could only be set as attributes before (e.g. dereference, ignore_zeros). The encoding and pax_headers arguments were added for pax support. There is a new tarinfo keyword argument that allows using subclassed TarInfo objects in TarFile. The boolean TarFile.posix attribute is deprecated, because now three tar formats are supported. Instead, the desired format for writing is specified using the constants USTAR_FORMAT, GNU_FORMAT and PAX_FORMAT as the format keyword argument. This change affects TarInfo.tobuf() as well. The test suite has been heavily reorganized and partially rewritten. A new testtar.tar was added that contains sample data in many formats from 4 different tar programs. Some bugs and quirks that also have been fixed: Directory names do no longer have a trailing slash in TarInfo.name or TarFile.getnames(). Adding the same file twice does not create a hardlink file member. The TarFile constructor does no longer need a name argument. Update the encoding package's search function to use absolute imports when
calling __import__. This helps make the expected search locations for encoding

One could use an explicit value for __path__ when making the call to __import__
to force the exact location searched for encodings. This would give the most
strict search path possible if one is worried about malicious code being
imported. The unfortunate side-effect of that is that if __path__ was modified
on 'encodings' on purpose in a safe way it would not be picked up in future
__import__ calls.
