Issue #789290: make sure that hash(2**63) == hash(2.**63) on 64-bit
platforms. The previous code was fragile, depending on the twin
accidents that:
(1) in C, casting the double value 2.**63 to long returns the integer
value -2**63, and
(2) in Python, hash(-2**63) == hash(2**63).
There's already a test for this in test_hash.

PyNumber_Int/PyNumber_Long API function so that it no longer attempts
to call the __long__ method for conversion. Only the __int__ and __trunc__
methods are used. (This removes a major remaining use of the nb_long
slot from the Python 3.x core.)

common cases are optimized thanks to a dedicated fast path and a moderate
amount of loop unrolling.
This will especially help text I/O (we already register a 30% speedup on large
reads on the io-c branch).
Also fix len() to return number of items rather than length in bytes.
I'm sorry it was not possible for me to work on this without reindenting
a bit some stuff around. The indentation in memoryobject.c is a mess,
I'll open a separate bug for it.

Adds a sanity check to avoid a *very rare* infinite loop due to a corrupt tls
key list data structure in the thread startup path.
This change is a companion to r60148 which already successfully dealt with a
similar issue on thread shutdown.
In particular this loop has been observed happening from this call path:

single list element pointing back upon itself.

Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
failed have been fixed.

Added '#' formatting to integers. This adds the 0b, 0o, or 0x prefix for bin, oct, hex. There's still one failing case, and I need to finish the docs. I hope to finish those today.
Second step: keep tp_getattr functions when they are complex,
but use PyObject_GenericGetAttr() as a fallback.

Issue 3110: Crash with weakref subclass,
seen after a "import multiprocessing.reduction"
An instance of a weakref subclass can have attributes.
If such a weakref holds the only strong reference to the object,
deleting the weakref will delete the object. In this case,
the callback must not be called, because the ref object is being deleted!

The repr() of a string now contains printable Unicode characters unescaped.
The new ascii() builtin can be used to get a repr() with only ASCII characters in it.
PEP and patch were written by Atsuo Ishimoto.
Use faster PyUnicode_FromEncodedObject() for bytes/bytearray.decode().
Add new PyCodec_KnownEncoding() API.
Add new PyUnicode_AsDecodedUnicode() and PyUnicode_AsEncodedUnicode() APIs.
Add missing PyUnicode_AsDecodedObject() to unicodeobject.h
Fix punicode codec to also work on memoryviews.
arguments. This gives about 30% speed improvement for the simplest
(but most common) cases. This patch skips the __format__ dispatch, and
also avoids creating an object to hold the format_spec.
Unfortunately, backporting this to 2.6 is going to be more challenging
due to str/unicode issues with format_spec. I'll work on that next.
Then I'll spend some time profiling and see what that tells me.

Addresses issue 2802: 'n' formatting for integers.
Adds 'n' as a format specifier for integers, to mirror the same
specifier which is already available for floats. 'n' is the same as
'd', but inserts the current locale-specific thousands grouping.
I added this as a stringlib function, but it's only used by str type,
not unicode. This is because of an implementation detail in
unicode.format(), which does its own str->unicode conversion. But the
unicode version will be needed in 3.0, and it may be needed by other
code eventually in 2.6 (maybe decimal?), so I left it as a stringlib
implementation. As long as the unicode version isn't instantiated,
there's no overhead for this.

Added module stub for copy_reg renaming in 3.0.
Renamed copy_reg to copyreg in the standard library, to avoid
spurious warnings and ease later merging to py3k branch. Public
documentation remains intact.

I finally got the time to update and merge Mark's and my trunk-math branch. The patch is collaborated work of Mark Dickinson and me. It was mostly done a few months ago. The patch fixes a lot of loose ends and edge cases related to operations with NaN, INF, very small values and complex math.
The patch also adds acosh, asinh, atanh, log1p and copysign to all platforms. Finally it fixes differences between platforms like different results or exceptions for edge cases. Have fun :)

Stupid me. Py_RETURN_NAN should actually return something ...

rewrite it so that it doesn't care about relative sizes of size_t,
long and long long.
The rewrite is modeled on PyLong_FromLong, instead of using
PyLong_FromByteArray; this makes the algorithm simpler and
more direct, and possibly also slightly faster.
