bpo-33234 Improve list() pre-sizing for inputs with known lengths (GH-9846)
The list() constructor isn't taking full advantage of known input lengths or length hints. This commit makes the constructor pre-size and not over-allocate when the input size is known (the input collection implements __len__). One on the main advantages is that this provides 12% difference in memory savings due to the difference between overallocating and allocating exactly the input size. For efficiency purposes and to avoid a performance regression for small generators and collections, the size of the input object is calculated using __len__ and not __length_hint__, as the later is considerably slower. |

I have compared output between pre- and post-patch runs of these tests to make sure there's nothing missing and nothing broken, on both Windows and Linux. The only differences I found were actually tests that were previously *not* run. |

test_math and test_cmath are failing on the FreeBSD 6.2 trunk buildbot,
apparently because tanh(-0.) loses the sign of zero on that platform.
If true, this is a bug in FreeBSD.
Added a configure test to verify this. I still need to figure out
how best to deal with this failure.

Issue 2665: On Windows, sys.stderr does not contain a valid file when running without a console.
It seems to work, but will fail at the first flush.
This causes IDLE to crash when too many warnings are printed.

This should fix issue2632. A long description of the two competing
problems is in the bug report (one old, one recently introduced trying
to fix the old one). In short:
buffer data during socket._fileobject.read() and readlines() within a
cStringIO object instead of a [] of str()s returned from the recv()
call.
This prevents excessive memory use due to the size parameter being
passed to recv() being grossly larger than the actual size of the data
returned *and* prevents excessive cpu usage due to looping in python
calling recv() with a very tiny size value if min() is used as the
previous memory-use bug "fix" did.
It also documents what the socket._fileobject._rbufsize member is
actually used for.
This is a candidate for back porting to 2.5.

In test_io, StatefulIncrementalDecoderTest was not part of the test suite.
And of course, the test failed:
a bytearray was used without reason in io.TextIOWrapper.tell().
The difference is that iterating over bytes (i.e. str in python2.6) returns 1-char bytes,
whereas bytearrays yield integers.
This code should still work with python3.0

Removed PyInt_GetMax and sys.maxint
I replaced sys.maxint with sys.maxsize in Lib/*.py. Does anybody see a problem with the change on Win 64bit platforms? Win 64's long is just 32bit but the sys.maxsize is now 2**63-1 on every 64bit platform. Also added docs for sys.maxsize. |

Seems to have worked, all the tests still pass.

Fix most trivially-findable print statements.
There's one major and one minor category still unfixed: doctests are the major category (and I hope to be able to augment the refactoring tool to refactor bona fide doctests soon); other code generating print statements in strings is the minor category. (Oh, and I don't know if the compiler package works.) |

Move list and tuple tests from test_types.py to their own scripts:
test_tuple.py and test_list.py. Common tests for tuple, list and UserList are shared (in seq_tests.py and list_tests.py). Port tests to PyUnit. (From SF patch #736962) |
