bpo-35053: Enhance tracemalloc to trace free lists (GH-10063)
tracemalloc now tries to update the traceback when an object is
reused from a "free list" (optimization for faster object creation,
used by the builtin list type for example).

Changes:

* Add _PyTraceMalloc_NewReference() function which tries to update
  the Python traceback of a Python object.
* _Py_NewReference() now calls _PyTraceMalloc_NewReference().
* Add an unit test.

bpo-9263: _PyObject_Dump() detects freed memory (GH-10061)
_PyObject_Dump() now uses an heuristic to check if the object memory
has been freed: log "<freed object>" in that case.

The heuristic rely on the debug hooks on Python memory allocators
which fills the memory with DEADBYTE (0xDB) when memory is
deallocated. Use PYTHONMALLOC=debug to always enable these debug
hooks.

Issue #28858: The change b9c9691c72c5 introduced a regression. It seems like

PyObject_CallFunctionObjArgs().

Victor Stinner 27580c1fb5 Replace PyObject_CallFunctionObjArgs() with fastcall
* PyObject_CallFunctionObjArgs(func, NULL) => _PyObject_CallNoArg(func)
* PyObject_CallFunctionObjArgs(func, arg, NULL) => _PyObject_CallArg1(func, arg)

PyObject_CallFunctionObjArgs() allocates 40 bytes on the C stack and requires
extra work to "parse" C arguments to build a C array of PyObject*.

_PyObject_CallNoArg() and _PyObject_CallArg1() are simpler and don't allocate
memory on the C stack.

This change is part of the fastcall project. The change on listsort() is
related to the issue #23507.

Yury Selivanov 5376ba9630 Issue #24400: Introduce a distinct type for 'async def' coroutines.
Summary of changes:

1. Coroutines now have a distinct, separate from generators
   type at the C level: PyGen_Type, and a new typedef PyCoroObject.
   PyCoroObject shares the initial segment of struct layout with
   PyGenObject, making it possible to reuse existing generators
   machinery. The new type is exposed as 'types.CoroutineType'.

   As a consequence of having a new type, CO_GENERATOR flag is
   no longer applied to coroutines.

2. Having a separate type for coroutines made it possible to add
   an __await__ method to the type. Although it is not used by the
   interpreter (see details on that below), it makes coroutines
   naturally (without using __instancecheck__) conform to
   collections.abc.Coroutine and collections.abc.Awaitable ABCs.

   [The __instancecheck__ is still used for generator-based
   coroutines, as we don't want to add __await__ for generators.]

3. Add new opcode: GET_YIELD_FROM_ITER. The opcode is needed to
   allow passing native coroutines to the YIELD_FROM opcode.

   Before this change, 'yield from o' expression was compiled to:

      (o)
      GET_ITER
      LOAD_CONST
      YIELD_FROM

   Now, we use GET_YIELD_FROM_ITER instead of GET_ITER.

   The reason for adding a new opcode is that GET_ITER is used
   in some contexts (such as 'for .. in' loops) where passing
   a coroutine object is invalid.

4. Add two new introspection functions to the inspec module:
   getcoroutinestate(c) and getcoroutinelocals(c).

5. inspect.iscoroutine(o) is updated to test if 'o' is a native
   coroutine object. Before this commit it used abc.Coroutine,
   and it was requested to update inspect.isgenerator(o) to use
   abc.Generator; it was decided, however, that inspect functions
   should really be tailored for checking for native types.

6. sys.set_coroutine_wrapper(w) API is updated to work with only
   native coroutines. Since types.coroutine decorator supports
   any type of callables now, it would be confusing that it does
   not work for all types of coroutines.

7. Exceptions logic in generators C implementation was updated
   to raise clearer messages for coroutines:

   Before: TypeError("generator raised StopIteration")
   After: TypeError("coroutine raised StopIteration")

sporadic crashes in multi-thread programs when several long deallocator
chains ran concurrently and involved subclasses of built-in container
types.

Because of this change, a couple extension modules compiled for 3.2.4
(those which use the trashcan mechanism, despite it being undocumented)
will not be loadable by 3.2.3 and earlier. However, extension modules
compiled for 3.2.3 and earlier will be loadable by 3.2.4.

Stefan Krah 9a2d99e28a - Issue #10181: New memoryview implementation fixes multiple ownership
and lifetime issues of dynamically allocated Py_buffer members (#9990)
  as well as crashes (#8305, #7433). Many new features have been added
  (See whatsnew/3.3), and the documentation has been updated extensively.
  The ndarray test object from _testbuffer.c implements all aspects of
  PEP-3118, so further development towards the complete implementation
  of the PEP can proceed in a test-driven manner.

  Thanks to Nick Coghlan, Antoine Pitrou and Pauli Virtanen for review
  and many ideas.

- Issue #12834: Fix incorrect results of memoryview.tobytes() for
  non-contiguous arrays.

- Issue #5231: Introduce memoryview.cast() method that allows changing
  format and shape without making a copy of the underlying memory.

  Issue #789290: make sure that hash(2**63) == hash(2.**63) on 64-bit
  platforms. The previous code was fragile, depending on the twin
  accidents that:

    (1) in C, casting the double value 2.**63 to long returns the integer
        value -2**63, and
    (2) in Python, hash(-2**63) == hash(2**63).

  There's already a test for this in test_hash.

Multiple reinitializations of Python 3.0 failed on a system without a hardcoded default fs encoding. The patch makes sure that the default fs encoding is freed and reset to NULL on e.g. Linux.

Reinitialization still fails in the 3rd round of my test suite:

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc b7f17e4bb4 Found another memory leak in longrangeiter. And redo the previous correction
without calling PyType_Ready().

Question 1: Should the interpreter register all types with PyType_Ready()?
Many types seem to avoid it.

Question 2: To reproduce the problem, run the following code:
    def f():
        while True:
           for a in iter(range(0,1,10**20)):
              pass

Guido van Rossum 98297ee781 Merging the py3k-pep3137 branch back into the py3k branch.
No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137
branch.  The most obvious changes:

  - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level);
  - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level);
  - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible.

I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type.

The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more
bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list.

  tuple.__repr__ did not consider a reference loop as it is not possible from
  Python code; but it is possible from C. object.__str__ had the issue of not
  expecting a type to doing something within it's tp_str implementation that
  could trigger an infinite recursion, but it could in C code.. Both found
  thanks to BaseException and how it handles its repr.

  Made the various is_* operations return booleans. This was discussed
  with Cawlishaw by mail, and he basically confirmed that to these is_*
  operations, there's no need to return Decimal(0) and Decimal(1) if
  the language supports the False and True booleans.

  Also added a few tests for the these functions in extra.decTest, since
  they are mostly untested (apart from the doctests).

  The constructor from tuple was way too permissive: it allowed bad
  coefficient numbers, floats in the sign, and other details that
  generated directly the wrong number in the best case, or triggered
  misfunctionality in the alorithms.

  Test cases added for these issues. Thanks Mark Dickinson.

Guido van Rossum 6ca130d0db Oops. The PyObject_Print() function was totally broken; the original code
was relying on PyString.tp_print but that no longer works.
Fortunately it's rarely called; only the gdb 'pyo' command seems affected.

Guido van Rossum 55b4a7b6dc Make test_descr.py pass. Had to disable a few tests, remove references

see how to fix but that seemed to be checking silly stuff only.

Martin v. Löwis 5b222135f8 Make identifiers str (not str8) objects throughout.
This affects the parser, various object implementations,
and all places that put identifiers into C string literals.

In testing, a number of crashes occurred as code would
fail when the recursion limit was reached (such as the
Unicode interning dictionary having key/value pairs where
key is not value). To solve these, I added an overflowed
flag, which allows for 50 more recursions after the
limit was reached and the exception was raised, and
a recursion_critical flag, which indicates that recursion
absolutely must be allowed, i.e. that a certain call
must not cause a stack overflow exception.

There are still some places where both str and str8 are
accepted as identifiers; these should eventually be
removed.

Walter Dörwald 1ab8330827 Add functions PyUnicode_Append() and PyUnicode_AppendAndDel() that mirror
PyString_Concat() and PyString_ConcatAndDel() (the name PyUnicode_Concat()
was already taken).

Change PyObject_Repr() to always return a unicode object.

Update all repr implementations to return unicode objects.

Add a function PyObject_ReprStr8() that calls PyObject_Repr() and converts
the result to an 8bit string.

Use PyObject_ReprStr8() where using PyObject_Repr() can't be done
straightforward.
