Issue #4580: slicing of memoryviews when itemsize != 1 is wrong.
Also fix len() to return number of items rather than length in bytes. I'm sorry it was not possible for me to work on this without reindenting a bit some stuff around. The indentation in memoryobject.c is a mess, I'll open a separate bug for it. |

#2630: Implement PEP 3138.
The repr() of a string now contains printable Unicode characters unescaped. The new ascii() builtin can be used to get a repr() with only ASCII characters in it. PEP and patch were written by Atsuo Ishimoto. |

Move abc._Abstract into object by adding a new flag Py_TPFLAGS_IS_ABSTRACT,
which forbids constructing types that have it set. The effect is to speed

Thread.start() used sleep(0.000001) to make sure it didn't return before the
new thread had started. At least on my MacBook Pro, that wound up sleeping for
a full 10ms (probably 1 jiffy). By using an Event instead, we can be absolutely
certain that the thread has started, and return more quickly (217us).
Before:
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread' 't = Thread(); t.start(); t.join()'
100 loops, best of 3: 10.3 msec per loop
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread; t = Thread()' 't.isAlive()'
1000000 loops, best of 3: 0.47 usec per loop
After:
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread' 't = Thread(); t.start(); t.join()'
1000 loops, best of 3: 217 usec per loop
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread; t = Thread()' 't.isAlive()'
1000000 loops, best of 3: 0.86 usec per loop
To be fair, the 10ms isn't CPU time, and other threads including the spawned
one get to run during it. There are also some slightly more complicated ways to
get back the .4us in isAlive() if we want.

Merging the py3k-pep3137 branch back into the py3k branch.
No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137 branch. The most obvious changes: - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level); - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level); - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible. I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type. The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list. |

Code review of the new buffer protocol. Mostly add questions that should
be answered with the comments removed. There are many places that require checks when doing arithmetic for memory sizes when allocating memory. Otherwise, overflow is possible with a subsequent crash. Fix SF #1777057 which was a result of not initializing the new BufferError properly. Had to update the test for exceptions for BufferError too. |

Backout the original 'fix' to 1721309 which had no effect.
Different versions of Berkeley DB handle this differently.
The comments and bug report should have the details. Memory is allocated
in 4.4 (and presumably earlier), but not in 4.5. Thus
4.5 has the free error, but not earlier versions.
Mostly update comments, plus make the free conditional.
This fix was already applied to the 2.5 branch.

Update all repr implementations to return unicode objects. Add a function PyObject_ReprStr8() that calls PyObject_Repr() and converts the result to an 8bit string. Use PyObject_ReprStr8() where using PyObject_Repr() can't be done straightforward. |

Restructure comparison dramatically. There is no longer a default
*ordering* between objects; there is only a default equality test (defined by an object being equal to itself only). Read the comment in object.c. The current implementation never uses a three-way comparison to compute a rich comparison, but it does use a rich comparison to compute a three-way comparison. I'm not quite done ripping out all the calls to PyObject_Compare/Cmp, or replacing tp_compare implementations with tp_richcompare implementations; but much of that has happened (to make most unit tests pass). The following tests still fail, because I need help deciding or understanding: test_codeop -- depends on comparing code objects test_datetime -- need Tim Peters' opinion test_marshal -- depends on comparing code objects test_mutants -- need help understanding it The problem with test_codeop and test_marshal is this: these tests compare two different code objects and expect them to be equal. Is that still a feature we'd like to support? I've temporarily removed the comparison and hash code from code objects, so they use the default (equality by pointer only) comparison. For the other two tests, run them to see for yourself. (There may be more failing test with "-u all".) A general problem with getting lots of these tests to pass is the reality that for object types that have a natural total ordering, implementing __cmp__ is much more convenient than implementing __eq__, __ne__, __lt__, and so on. Should we go back to allowing __cmp__ to provide a total ordering? Should we provide some other way to implement rich comparison with a single method override? Alex proposed a __key__() method; I've considered a __richcmp__() method. Or perhaps __cmp__() just shouldn't be killed off... |

Completely get rid of PyClass and PyInstance.
(classobject.[ch] aren't empty yet because they also define PyMethod.) This breaks lots of stuff, notably cPickle. But it's a step in the right direction. I'll clean it up later. (Also a few unrelated changes, e.g. T_NONE to define a "struct member" that is always None, and simplification of __hash__ -- these are unfinished.) |

Get rid of most of the flags (in tp_flags) that keep track of various
variations of the type struct and its attachments. In Py3k, all type structs have to have all fields -- no binary backwards compatibility. Had to change the complex object to a new-style number! |
