Issue 3723: Fixed initialization of subinterpreters
The patch fixes several issues with Py_NewInterpreter as well as the demo for multiple subinterpreters. Most of the patch was written by MvL with help from Benjamin, Amaury and me. Graham Dumpleton has verified that this patch fixes an issue with mod_wsgi. |

Rename PyUnicode_AsString -> _PyUnicode_AsString and
PyUnicode_AsStringAndSize -> _PyUnicode_AsStringAndSize to mark them for interpreter internal use only. We'll have to rework these APIs or create new ones for the purpose of accessing the UTF-8 representation of Unicode objects for 3.1. |

#2630: Implement PEP 3138.
The repr() of a string now contains printable Unicode characters unescaped. The new ascii() builtin can be used to get a repr() with only ASCII characters in it. PEP and patch were written by Atsuo Ishimoto. |

Fixes for shared 2.6 code that implements PEP 3101, advanced string
formatting. Includes: - Modifying tests for basic types to use __format__ methods, instead of builtin "format". - Adding PyObject_Format. - General str/unicode cleanup discovered when backporting to 2.6. - Removing datetimemodule.c's time_format, since it was identical to date_format. The files in Objects/stringlib that implement PEP 3101 (stringdefs.h, unicodedefs.h, formatter.h, string_format.h) are identical in trunk and py3k. Any changes from here on should be made to trunk, and changes will propogate to py3k). |

Partial fix for bug #1306
Multiple reinitializations of Python 3.0 failed on a system without a hardcoded default fs encoding. The patch makes sure that the default fs encoding is freed and reset to NULL on e.g. Linux. I've also taken the liberty to increase the debugging in Objects/object.c:_Py_ForgetReference(). The method is used to validate the reference chain. The most obvious changes: - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level); - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level); - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible. I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type. The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list. |

Make map() and filter() identical to itertools.imap() and .ifilter(),
respectively.
I fixed two bootstrap issues, due to the dynamic import of itertools:
1. Starting python requires that map() and filter() are not used until
site.py has added build/lib.<arch> to sys.path.
2. Building python requires that setup.py and distutils and everything
they use is free of map() and filter() calls.
Beyond this, I only fixed the tests in test_builtin.py.
Others, please help fixing the remaining tests that are now broken!
The fixes are usually simple:
a. map(None, X) -> list(X)
b. map(F, X) -> list(map(F, X))
c. map(lambda x: F(x), X) -> [F(x) for x in X]
d. filter(F, X) -> list(filter(F, X))
e. filter(lambda x: P(x), X) -> [x for x in X if P(x)]
Someone, please also contribute a fixer for 2to3 to do this.
It can leave map()/filter() calls alone that are already
inside a list() or sorted() call or for-loop.
Only in rare cases have I seen code that depends on map() of lists
of different lengths going to the end of the longest, or on filter()
of a string or tuple returning an object of the same type; these
will need more thought to fix.

Rip out the file object's implementation.
Fixed test_import.py while I was at it. However, there's still a problem in import.c -- get_file() can leak a FILE struct (not a file descriptor though). I'm not sure how to fix this; closing the FILE* closes the file descriptor, and that's the wrong thing to do when there's still a Python file object keeping the file descriptor open. I also would rather not mess with dup(), as it won't port to Windows. |

Make identifiers str (not str8) objects throughout.
This affects the parser, various object implementations, and all places that put identifiers into C string literals. In testing, a number of crashes occurred as code would fail when the recursion limit was reached (such as the Unicode interning dictionary having key/value pairs where key is not value). To solve these, I added an overflowed flag, which allows for 50 more recursions after the limit was reached and the exception was raised, and a recursion_critical flag, which indicates that recursion absolutely must be allowed, i.e. that a certain call must not cause a stack overflow exception. There are still some places where both str and str8 are accepted as identifiers; these should eventually be removed. |

Checkpoint. Manipulated things so that string literals are always
unicode, and a few other compensating changes, e.g. str <- unicode, chr <- unichr, and repr() of a unicode string no longer starts with 'u'. Lots of unit tests are broken, but some basic things work, in particular distutils works so the extensions can be built, and test_builtin.py works. |

Implement PEP 3115 -- new metaclass syntax and semantics.
The compiler package hasn't been updated yet; test_compiler.py fails. Otherwise all tests seem to be passing now. There are no occurrences of __metaclass__ left in the standard library. Docs have not been updated. |
