gh-110167: Increase support.LOOPBACK_TIMEOUT to 10 seconds (#110413)
Increase support.LOOPBACK_TIMEOUT from 5 to 10 seconds. Also increase
the timeout depending on the --timeout option. For example, for a
test timeout of 40 minutes (ARM Raspbian 3.x), use LOOPBACK_TIMEOUT
of 20 seconds instead of 5 seconds before.

gh-110367: Enhance regrtest -jN --verbose3 (#110368)
When using worker processes (-jN) with --verbose3 option, regrtest
can now display the worker output even if a worker process does
crash. Previously, sys.stdout and sys.stderr were replaced and so
the worker output was lost on a crash.

gh-109649: Use os.process_cpu_count() (#110165)
Replace os.cpu_count() with os.process_cpu_count() in modules:

* compileall
* concurrent.futures
* multiprocessing

Replace os.cpu_count() with os.process_cpu_count() in programs:

* _decimal deccheck.py test
* freeze.py
* multissltests.py
* python -m test (regrtest)
* wasm_build.py

Other changes:

* test.pythoninfo logs os.process_cpu_count().
* regrtest gets os.process_cpu_count() / os.cpu_count() in headers.

gh-109276: regrtest: add WORKER_FAILED state (#110148)
Rename WORKER_ERROR to WORKER_BUG. Add WORKER_FAILED state: it does
not stop the manager, whereas WORKER_BUG does.

Change also TestResults.display_result() order: display failed tests
at the end, the important important information.

WorkerThread now tries to get the signal name for negative exit code.

30 seconds.

gh-109972: Split test_gdb.py into test_gdb package (#109977)
Split test_gdb.py file into a test_gdb package made of multiple

* Split test_gdb.py into multiple files in Lib/test/test_gdb/

gh-109566: regrtest reexecutes the process (#109909)
When --fast-ci or --slow-ci option is used, regrtest now replaces the
current process with a new process to add "-u -W default -bb -E"
options to Python.

Changes:

* PCbuild/rt.bat and Tools/scripts/run_tests.py no longer need to add
  "-u -W default -bb -E" options to Python: it's now done by
  regrtest.
* Fix Tools/scripts/run_tests.py: flush stdout before replacing the
  process. Previously, buffered messages were lost.

gh-109566, regrtest: Add --fast-ci and --slow-ci options (#109570)
* Add --fast-ci and --slow-ci options to libregrtest:

  * --fast-ci uses a default timeout of 10 minutes and "-u all,-cpu"
    (skip slowest tests).
  * --slow-ci uses a default timeout of 20 minues and "-u all" (run
    all tests).

* regrtest header now lists test resources.
* Makefile changes:

  * "make test", "make hostrunnertest" and "make coverage-report" now
    use --fast-ci option and TESTTIMEOUT variable.
  * "make buildbottest" now uses "--slow-ci". Remove options which
    became redundant with "--slow-ci".
  * "make testall" and "make testuniversal" now use --slow-ci option
    and TESTTIMEOUT variable.
  * "make testall" now uses "find -exec rm ..." instead of
    "find ... -print|xargs rm ...", same as "make clean".

* GitHub Actions workflow:

  * Ubuntu and Address Sanitizer jobs now use "make test". Remove
    options which became redundant with "--fast-ci".
  * Windows jobs now use --fast-ci option.
  * Use -j0 to detect the number of CPUs.

* Set Makefile TESTTIMEOUT default to an empty string, since
  --slow-ci and --fast-ci use different default timeout. It's now
  accepted to pass "--timeout=" to regrtest: treated as not timeout.
* Tools/scripts/run_tests.py now uses --fast-ci option.
* Tools/buildbot/test.bat now uses --slow-ci option. Remove
  --timeout=1200 option, redundant with --slow-ci.

gh-109276: libregrtest: WASM use filename for JSON (#109340)
On Emscripten and WASI platforms, or if --python command line option
is used, libregrtest now uses a filename for the JSON file.

Emscripten and WASI buildbot workers run the main test process with a
different Python (Linux) which spawns Emscripten/WASI processes using
the command specified in --python command line option. Passing a file
descriptor from the parent process to the child process doesn't work
in this case.

* Add JsonFile and JsonFileType classes
* Add RunTests.json_file_use_filename() method.
* Add a test in test_regrtest on the --python command line option.
* test_regrtest: add parallel=False parameter.

Fix Emscripten and WASI: start the test worker process in the Python

found. Then worker_process() changes to a temporary directory created
to run tests.

* create_worker_process() uses os_helper.SAVEDCWD as cwd.
* worker_process() uses get_temp_dir() as the parent directory for
  get_work_dir().
* Don't use plural but singual for "test" in "Run 1 test ..."

Rename TestResult.write_json() to TestResult.write_json_into().

worker_process() no longer writes an empty line at the end. There is

gh-109162: Refactor Regrtest.main() (#109163)
* main() now calls _parse_args() and pass 'ns' to Regrtest
  constructor. Remove kwargs argument from Regrtest.main().
* _parse_args() checks ns.huntrleaks.
* set_temp_dir() is now responsible to call expanduser().
* Regrtest.main() sets self.tests earlier.
* Add TestTuple and TestList types.
* Rename MatchTests to FilterTuple and rename MatchTestsDict
  to FilterTestDict.
* TestResult.get_rerun_match_tests() return type
  is now FilterTuple: return a tuple instead of a list.
  RunTests.tests type becomes TestTuple.

gh-108834: regrtest reruns failed tests in subprocesses (#108839)
When using --rerun option, regrtest now re-runs failed tests
in verbose mode in fresh worker processes to have more
deterministic behavior. So it can write its final report even
if a test killed a worker progress.

Add --fail-rerun option to regrtest: exit with non-zero exit code
if a test failed pass passed when re-run in verbose mode (in a
fresh process). That's now more useful since tests can pass
when re-run in a fresh worker progress, whereas they failed
when run after other tests when tests are run sequentially.

Rename --verbose2 option (-w) to --rerun. Keep --verbose2 as a
deprecated alias.

Changes:

* Fix and enhance statistics in regrtest summary. Add "(filtered)"
  when --match and/or --ignore options are used.
* Add RunTests class.
* Add TestResult.get_rerun_match_tests() method
* Rewrite code to serialize/deserialize worker arguments as JSON
  using a new WorkerJob class.
* Fix stats when a test is run with --forever --rerun.
* If failed test names cannot be parsed, log a warning and don't
  filter tests.
* test_regrtest.test_rerun_success() now uses a marker file, since
  the test is re-run in a separated process.
* Add tests on normalize_test_name() function.
* Add test_success() and test_skip() tests to test_regrtest.

Changes:

* Rewrite TestResult as a dataclass with a new State class.
* Add test.support.TestStats class and Regrtest.stats_dict attribute.
* libregrtest.runtest functions now modify a TestResult instance
  in-place.
* libregrtest summary lists the number of run tests and skipped
  tests, and denied resources.
* Add TestResult.has_meaningful_duration() method.
* Compute TestResult duration in the upper function.
* Use time.perf_counter() instead of time.monotonic().
* Regrtest: rename 'resource_denieds' attribute to 'resource_denied'.
* Rename CHILD_ERROR to MULTIPROCESSING_ERROR.
* Use match/case syntadx to have different code depending on the
  test state.

GH-86275: Implementation of hypothesis stubs for property-based tests, with zoneinfo tests (#22863)
These are stubs to be used for adding hypothesis (https://hypothesis.readthedocs.io/en/latest/) tests to the standard library.

When the tests are run in an environment where `hypothesis` and its various dependencies are not installed, the stubs will turn any tests with examples into simple parameterized tests and any tests without examples are skipped.

It also adds hypothesis tests for the `zoneinfo` module, and a Github Actions workflow to run the hypothesis tests as a non-required CI job.

The full hypothesis interface is not stubbed out — missing stubs can be added as necessary.

gh-82054: allow test runner to split test_asyncio to execute in parallel by sharding. (#103927)
This runs test_asyncio sub-tests in parallel using sharding from Cinder. This suite is typically the longest-pole in runs because it is a test package with a lot of further sub-tests otherwise run serially. By breaking out the sub-tests as independent modules we can run a lot more in parallel.

After porting we can see the direct impact on a multicore system.

Without this change:
  Running make test is 5 min 26 seconds
With this change:
  Running make test takes 3 min 39 seconds

That'll vary based on system and parallelism. On a `-j 4` run similar to what CI and buildbot systems often do, it reduced the overall test suite completion latency by 10%.

The drawbacks are that this implementation is hacky and due to the sorting of the tests it obscures when the asyncio tests occur and involves changing CPython test infrastructure but, the wall time saved it is worth it, especially in low-core count CI runs as it pulls a long tail. The win for productivity and reserved CI resource usage is significant.

Future tests that deserve to be refactored into split up suites to benefit from are test_concurrent_futures and the way the _test_multiprocessing suite gets run for all start methods. As exposed by passing the -o flag to python -m test to get a list of the 10 longest running tests.

gh-84436: Implement Immortal Objects (gh-19474)
This is the implementation of PEP683

Motivation:

The PR introduces the ability to immortalize instances in CPython which bypasses reference counting. Tagging objects as immortal allows up to skip certain operations when we know that the object will be around for the entire execution of the runtime.

Note that this by itself will bring a performance regression to the runtime due to the extra reference count checks. However, this brings the ability of having truly immutable objects that are useful in other contexts such as immutable data sharing between sub-interpreters.
