Move abc._Abstract into object by adding a new flag Py_TPFLAGS_IS_ABSTRACT,
which forbids constructing types that have it set. The effect is to speed

Thread.start() used sleep(0.000001) to make sure it didn't return before the
new thread had started. At least on my MacBook Pro, that wound up sleeping for
a full 10ms (probably 1 jiffy). By using an Event instead, we can be absolutely
certain that the thread has started, and return more quickly (217us).
Before:
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread' 't = Thread(); t.start(); t.join()'
100 loops, best of 3: 10.3 msec per loop
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread; t = Thread()' 't.isAlive()'
1000000 loops, best of 3: 0.47 usec per loop
After:
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread' 't = Thread(); t.start(); t.join()'
1000 loops, best of 3: 217 usec per loop
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread; t = Thread()' 't.isAlive()'
1000000 loops, best of 3: 0.86 usec per loop
To be fair, the 10ms isn't CPU time, and other threads including the spawned
one get to run during it. There are also some slightly more complicated ways to
get back the .4us in isAlive() if we want.

Create a db_home directory with a unique name so multiple users can
run the test simultaneously. The simplest thing I found that worked
on both Windows and Unix was to use the PID. It's unique so should be
sufficient. This should prevent many of the spurious failures of
the automated tests since they run as different users.
Also cleanup the directory consistenly in the tearDown methods.
It would be nice if someone ensured that the directories are always
created with a consistent name.

Crashers of the day: Py_CLEAR must be used when there is a chance that the
function can be called recursively.
This was discussed in issue1020188.
In python codebase, all occurrences of Py_[X]DECREF(xxx->yyy) are suspect,
except when they appear in tp_new or tp_dealloc functions, or when
the member cannot be of a user-defined class.
Note that tp_init is not safe.
I do have a (crashing) example for every changed line.
Is it worth adding them to the test suite?
Example:
class SpecialStr(str):

#1750076: Debugger did not step on every iteration of a while statement.
The mapping between bytecode offsets and source lines (lnotab) did not contain
an entry for the beginning of the loop.
Now it does, and the lnotab can be a bit larger:
in particular, several statements on the same line generate several entries.
However, this does not bother the settrace function, which will trigger only
one 'line' event.
The lnotab seems to be exactly the same as with python2.4.

Use a condition variable (threading.Event) rather than sleeps and checking a
global to determine when the server is ready to be used. This slows the test
down, but should make it correct. There was a race condition before where the
server could have assigned a port, yet it wasn't ready to serve requests. If
the client sent a request before the server was completely ready, it would get
an exception. There was machinery to try to handle this condition. All of
that should be unnecessary and removed if this change works. A NOTE was
added as a comment about what needs to be fixed.
The buildbots will tell us if there are more errors or

Tested with Python build: trunk:54235:59936M -- the reported error
occurs with Django installed (or with any __init__.py present on
the path that raises an exception), and such errors indeed go away
when this change is applied.

As discussed in issue 1700288:
ctypes takes some liberties when creating python types: it modifies the types'
__dict__ directly, bypassing all the machinery of type objects which deal with
special methods. And this broke recent optimisations of method lookup.
Now we try to modify the type with more "official" functions.

Give meaning to the oparg for BUILD_MAP: estimated size of the dictionary.
Allows dictionaries to be pre-sized (upto 255 elements) saving time lost
to re-sizes with their attendant mallocs and re-insertions.
Has zero effect on small dictionaries (5 elements or fewer), a slight
benefit for dicts upto 22 elements (because they had to resize once
anyway), and more benefit for dicts upto 255 elements (saving multiple
resizes during the build-up and reducing the number of collisions on
the first insertions). Beyond 255 elements, there is no addional benefit.

I replaced sys.maxint with sys.maxsize in Lib/*.py. Does anybody see a problem with the change on Win 64bit platforms? Win 64's long is just 32bit but the sys.maxsize is now 2**63-1 on every 64bit platform.

Applied my patch #1455 with some extra fixes for VS 2005
The new msvc9compiler module supports VS 2005 and VS 2008. I've also fixed build_ext to support PCbuild8 and PCbuild9 and backported my fix for xxmodule.c from py3k. The old code msvccompiler is still in place in case somebody likes to build an extension with VS 2003 or earlier.
I've also updated the cygwin compiler module for VS 2005 and VS 2008. It works with VS 2005 but I'm unable to test it with VS 2008. We have to wait for a new version of cygwin.

Multiple reinitializations of Python 3.0 failed on a system without a hardcoded default fs encoding. The patch makes sure that the default fs encoding is freed and reset to NULL on e.g. Linux.
I've also taken the liberty to increase the debugging in Objects/object.c:_Py_ForgetReference(). The method is used to validate the reference chain.
Reinitialization still fails in the 3rd round of my test suite:
* ob

refcount: 0
address : 0x821c840

* op->_ob_next->_ob_prev
object : bytearray(b'')
type : bytearray
refcount: 1

Fatal Python error: UNREF invalid object
Before the patch a lot of internal types weren't available in the header files. The patch exposes the new iterators, views and some other types to all C modules. I've also renamed some of the types and tp_names.

Now in find, rfind, index, and rindex, you can use None as defaults,
as usual with slicing (both with str and unicode strings). This
fixes issue 1259.
For str only the stringobject.c file was modified. But for unicode,

Question 1: Should the interpreter register all types with PyType_Ready()?
Many types seem to avoid it.
Question 2: To reproduce the problem, run the following code:

pass
f()
And watch the memory used by the process.
How do we test this in a unittest?
After a long discussion about the problem with Windows GUI apps Guido decided that sys.stdin, stdout and stderr should be None when the C runtime library returns invalid file descriptors for the standard streams.
So far the only known cases are Windows GUI apps and scripts started with pythonw on Windows. The OS restrictions are tight enough to catch the problem on other OSes.
Added some more methods and attributes to stdprinter to ease up debugging #1415 on Windows. It also makes the object more file like. Now it can be used as a working replacement for an io instance.

On Windows fileno(stdout) and fileno(stderr) can return an invalid file descriptor number (-2 on my machine). It happens only for pythonw.exe but not for python.exe.
Catch the problem ASAP in PyFile_NewStdPrinter(). I've also removed the call to PyErr_BadInternalCall(). It was causing a seg fault because the exceptions aren't available yet.
No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137
branch. The most obvious changes:
- str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level);
- bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level);
- PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible.
I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type.
The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more
bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list.
Added PyUnicode_DecodeFSDefaultAndSize
Fixed a problem with the sys.path code that caused a segfault on Windows when the path contains non ASCII chars. The code for sys.executable, exec_prefix and prefix should be fixed, too.

could trigger an infinite recursion, but it could in C code.. Both found
thanks to BaseException and how it handles its repr.
Closes issue #1686386. Thanks to Thomas Herve for taking an initial stab at
coming up with a solution.

Made the various is_* operations return booleans. This was discussed
with Cawlishaw by mail, and he basically confirmed that to these is_*
operations, there's no need to return Decimal(0) and Decimal(1) if
the language supports the False and True booleans.
Also added a few tests for the these functions in extra.decTest, since
they are mostly untested (apart from the doctests).

Before sys.stderr is set to the proper thing, set it to a really simple
file-like object that can print tracebacks using direct file descriptor I/O.
This is handy for debugging.
Add a closefd flag to open() which can be set to False to prevent closing
the file descriptor when close() is called or when the object is destroyed.
Useful to ensure that sys.std{in,out,err} keep their file descriptors open
when Python is uninitialized. (This was always a feature in 2.x, it just
wasn't implemented in 3.0 yet.)
Add a bytes iterator (copied from stringobject.c and reindented :-).
I (Guido) added a small change to _abcoll.py to remove the registration
of bytes as a virtual subtype of Iterator -- the presence of __iter__
will handle that now.
(It's still technically broken since the va_args code assumes %x is
an int while we're passing a long, but that's mostly theoretical,
and it's done all over the place.)
Code that has been returning str8 becomes much more apparent thanks to this
(e.g., struct module returning str8 for all string-related formats or sqlite3
passing in str8 instances when converting objects that had a __conform__
method). One also has to watch out in C code when making a key from char *
using PyString in the C code but a str instance in Python code as that will not
longer compare equal.
Once str8 gains a constructor like the current bytes type then
test_modulefinder needs a cleanup as the fix is a little messy in that file.
Thanks goes to Thomas Lee for writing the patch for the change giving an
initial run-down of why most of the tests were failing.
Additional patch by Christian Heimes to deal more cleanly with the
FILE* vs file-descriptor issues.
I cleaned up his code a bit, and moved the lseek() call into import.c.
to be called a buffer). Shares code with stringobject when possible.
Adds unit tests with common code that should be usable to test the PEPs
mutable buffer() and immutable bytes() types.
http://bugs.python.org/issue1261
Changes to make __file__ a proper Unicode object, using the default
filesystem encoding.
This is a bit tricky because the default filesystem encoding isn't
set by the time we import the first modules; at that point we fudge
things a bit. This is okay since __file__ isn't really used much
except for error reporting.
Tested on OSX and Linux only so far.
str.join(...) now applies str() to the sequence elements if they're
not strings alraedy, except for bytes, which still raise TypeError
(for the same reasons why ""==b"" raises it).

allocations (three block allocations!) and lots of redundant work.
By using the same hash algorithm as string_hash(), we maintain the
invariant that the hash of an ASCII string is the same whether
represented as a PyString or a PyUnicode.
For now, unicode_eq() is static inside dictobject.c;
eventually we may have to move it into unicodeobject.c,
so as to support the same hacks from setobject.c.
None of this seems to affect performance much, but it's still the
right thing to do.
Support bytes.split() and bytes.strip() -- these split/strip using ASCII
whitespace (tab, space, CR, LF, FF, VT) like their str counterparts.
Also for rsplit(), lstrip() and rstrip().
And change all these functions to accept arbitrary buffer-API-supporting
arguments.
With unit tests.

a tuple (literal, field_name, format_spec, conversion).
literal will always be a string, but might be of zero length.
field_name will be None if there is no markup text
format_spec will be a (possibly zero length) string if
field_name is non-None
conversion will be a one character string, or None
This makes the Formatter class, and especially it's parse()
method, easier to understand.

Here's a patch which addresses this. It also fixes the indentation in
PySSL_SetError, bringing it into line with PEP 7, fixes a compile warning
about one of the OpenSSL macros, and makes the namespace a bit more
consistent. I've tested it on FC 7 and OS X 10.4.

Improve extended slicing support in builtin types and classes. Specifically:
- Specialcase extended slices that amount to a shallow copy the same way as
is done for simple slices, in the tuple, string and unicode case.
- Specialcase step-1 extended slices to optimize the common case for all
involved types.
- For lists, allow extended slice assignment of differing lengths as long
as the step is 1. (Previously, 'l[:2:1] = []' failed even though
'l[:2] = []' and 'l[:2:None] = []' do not.)
- Implement extended slicing for buffer, array, structseq, mmap and
UserString.UserString.
- Implement slice-object support (but not non-step-1 slice assignment) for
UserString.MutableString.
- Add tests for all new functionality.

4 elements. No need for old is_markup element, the same information

Factored string.Formatter class to make subclasses easier to write.
Known issues:
The string.Formatter class, as discussed in the PEP, is incomplete.
Error handling needs to conform to the PEP.
Need to fix this warning that I introduced in Python/formatter_unicode.c:
Objects/stringlib/unicodedefs.h:26: warning: `STRINGLIB_CMP' defined but not used
Need to make sure sign formatting is correct, more tests needed.
Need to remove '()' sign formatting, left over from an earlier version of the PEP.
Also return a boolean for the readonly flag.
Other cleanup: make sure to set an exception when returning NULL and
reformat the getsets to be shorter by putting them all on one line.
be answered with the comments removed.
There are many places that require checks when doing arithmetic for memory
sizes when allocating memory. Otherwise, overflow is possible with
a subsequent crash.
Fix SF #1777057 which was a result of not initializing the new BufferError
properly. Had to update the test for exceptions for BufferError too.
ut-32-be). On narrow builds the codecs combine surrogate pairs in the unicode
object into one codepoint on encoding and create surrogate pairs for
codepoints outside the BMP on decoding. Lone surrogates are passed through
unchanged in all cases.
Backport to the trunk will follow.
