Issue #10992: make tests pass when run under coverage.
Various tests fail when run under coverage. A primary culprit is refcount tests which fail as the counts are thrown off by the coverage code. A new decorator -- test.support.refcount_test -- is used to decorate tests which test refcounts and to skip them when running under coverage. Other tests simply fail because of changes in the system (e.g., __local__ suddenly appearing). Thanks to Kristian Vlaardingerbroek for helping to diagnose the test failures. |

Do not compile stubs for the sha2 series hashes in the openssl hashlib
module when the openssl version is too old to support them. That
leads both compiled code bloat and to unittests attempting to test
implementations that don't exist for comparison purposes on such
platforms.

Note that a number of the changes listed below were not applicable to the Py3k branch, and hence the corresponding
files are unchanged in this checkin. This checkin is also the first time the environment checking in regrtest has been forward ported to the Py3k branch. This checkin causes test_xmlrpc to fail - see issue 7165 (it's a bug in the 3.x version of xmlrpc.server) I am also getting a failure in test_telnetlib, but it isn't clear yet if that is due to these changes. merge the io-c branch: C implementation of the io module
The main io module now uses the C implementation. The Python one still exists in Lib/_pyio.py for ease of testing new features and usefulness to other implementers. Removed PyInt_GetMax and sys.maxint
I replaced sys.maxint with sys.maxsize in Lib/*.py. Does anybody see a problem with the change on Win 64bit platforms? Win 64's long is just 32bit but the sys.maxsize is now 2**63-1 on every 64bit platform. Also added docs for sys.maxsize. |

Removed the API to create unbound methods and simplified the API for bound methods. The signature is PyMethod_New(func, instance).
Also removed im_class and renamed im_self to __self__ and im_func to __func__. im_class can be substituted with method.__self__.__class__. I've also updated some parts of the documenation. |

Merging the py3k-pep3137 branch back into the py3k branch.
No detailed change log; just check out the change log for the py3k-pep3137 branch. The most obvious changes: - str8 renamed to bytes (PyString at the C level); - bytes renamed to buffer (PyBytes at the C level); - PyString and PyUnicode are no longer compatible. I.e. we now have an immutable bytes type and a mutable bytes type. The behavior of PyString was modified quite a bit, to make it more bytes-like. Some changes are still on the to-do list. |

to 'file', and fix a bunch of subtleties in the behavior of objects related to overriding __str__. Also disabled a few tests that I couldn't see how to fix but that seemed to be checking silly stuff only. |

Fix problems in x64 build that were discovered by the testsuite:
- Reenable modules on x64 that had been disabled aeons ago for Itanium.
- Cleared up confusion about compilers for 64 bit windows. There is only Itanium and x64. Added macros MS_WINI64 and MS_WINX64 for those rare cases where it matters, such as the disabling of modules above.
- Set target platform (_WIN32_WINNT and WINVER) to 0x0501 (XP) for x64, and 0x0400 (NT 4.0) otherwise, which are the targeted minimum platforms.
- Fixed thread_nt.h. The emulated InterlockedCompareExchange function didn?\194?\180t work on x64, probaby due to the lack of a "volatile" specifier. Anyway, win95 is no longer a target platform.
- Itertools module used wrong constant to check for overflow in count()
- PyInt_AsSsize_t couldn't deal with attribute error when accessing the __long__ member.
- PyLong_FromSsize_t() incorrectly specified that the operand were unsigned.
With these changes, the x64 passes the testsuite, for those modules present.

The TarInfo class now contains all necessary logic to process and create tar header data which has been moved there from the TarFile class. The fromtarfile() method was added. The new path and linkpath properties are aliases for the name and linkname attributes in correspondence to the pax naming scheme. The TarFile constructor and classmethods now accept a number of keyword arguments which could only be set as attributes before (e.g. dereference, ignore_zeros). The encoding and pax_headers arguments were added for pax support. There is a new tarinfo keyword argument that allows using subclassed TarInfo objects in TarFile. The boolean TarFile.posix attribute is deprecated, because now three tar formats are supported. Instead, the desired format for writing is specified using the constants USTAR_FORMAT, GNU_FORMAT and PAX_FORMAT as the format keyword argument. This change affects TarInfo.tobuf() as well. The test suite has been heavily reorganized and partially rewritten. A new testtar.tar was added that contains sample data in many formats from 4 different tar programs. Some bugs and quirks that also have been fixed: Directory names do no longer have a trailing slash in TarInfo.name or TarFile.getnames(). Adding the same file twice does not create a hardlink file member. The TarFile constructor does no longer need a name argument.
