A backslash-character pair that is not a valid escape sequence now
generates a SyntaxWarning, instead of DeprecationWarning. For
example, re.compile("\d+\.\d+") now emits a SyntaxWarning ("\d" is an
invalid escape sequence), use raw strings for regular expression:
re.compile(r"\d+\.\d+"). In a future Python version, SyntaxError will
eventually be raised, instead of SyntaxWarning.
Octal escapes with value larger than 0o377 (ex: "\477"), deprecated
in Python 3.11, now produce a SyntaxWarning, instead of
DeprecationWarning. In a future Python version they will be
eventually a SyntaxError.
codecs.escape_decode() and codecs.unicode_escape_decode() are left
unchanged: they still emit DeprecationWarning.
* The parser only emits SyntaxWarning for Python 3.12 (feature
version), and still emits DeprecationWarning on older Python
versions.
* Fix SyntaxWarning by using raw strings in Tools/c-analyzer/ and
wasm_build.py.
Previously codeop.compile_command() emitted compiler warnings (SyntaxWarning or
DeprecationWarning) and raised a SyntaxError for incomplete input containing
a potentially incorrect code. Now it always returns None for incomplete input
without emitting any warnings.
With the new parser, the error message contains always the trailing
newlines, causing the comparison of the repr of the error messages
in codeop to fail. This commit makes the new parser mirror the old parser's
behaviour regarding trailing newlines.
* Rename PyConfig.use_peg to _use_peg_parser
* Document PyConfig._use_peg_parser and mark it a deprecated
* Mark -X oldparser option and PYTHONOLDPARSER env var as deprecated
in the documentation.
* Add use_old_parser() and skip_if_new_parser() to test.support
* Remove sys.flags.use_peg: use_old_parser() uses
_testinternalcapi.get_configs() instead.
* Enhance test_embed tests
* subprocess._args_from_interpreter_flags() copies -X oldparser
* Add support.MS_WINDOWS: True if Python is running on Microsoft Windows.
* Add support.MACOS: True if Python is running on Apple macOS.
* Replace support.is_android with support.ANDROID
* Replace support.is_jython with support.JYTHON
* Cleanup code to initialize unix_shell
I have compared output between pre- and post-patch runs of these tests
to make sure there's nothing missing and nothing broken, on both
Windows and Linux. The only differences I found were actually tests
that were previously *not* run.

Adding tests derived from the Jython project. These are primarily tests of
'single' statements with partial sentences (so they test things like "try:" in
interactive mode). Others tests hit areas that previously failed in Jython. A
couple still fail in Jython, mainly due to the difficulty of parsing partial
sentences (but should be fixed by Jython 2.6).

Completely get rid of StringIO.py and cStringIO.c.
I had to fix a few tests and modules beyond what Christian did, and
invent a few conventions. E.g. in elementtree, I chose to
write/return Unicode strings whe no encoding is given, but bytes when
an explicit encoding is given. Also mimetools was made to always
assume binary files.

with an indented code block but no newline would raise SyntaxError.
This would have been a four-line change in parsetok.c... Except
codeop.py depends on this behavior, so a compilation flag had to be
invented that causes the tokenizer to revert to the old behavior;
this required extra changes to 2 .h files, 2 .c files, and 2 .py
files. (Fixes SF bug #501622.)
imports e.g. test_support must do so using an absolute package name
such as "import test.test_support" or "from test import test_support".
This also updates the README in Lib/test, and gets rid of the
duplicate data dirctory in Lib/test/data (replaced by
Lib/email/test/data).
Now Tim and Jack can have at it. :)
