_Py_char2wchar() callers usually need the result size in characters. Since it's
trivial to compute it in _Py_char2wchar() (O(1) whereas wcslen() is O(n)), add
an option to get it.
* PyUnicode_EncodeFSDefault(), PyUnicode_DecodeFSDefaultAndSize() and
PyUnicode_DecodeFSDefault() use the locale encoding instead of UTF-8 if
Py_FileSystemDefaultEncoding is NULL
* redecode_filenames() functions and _Py_code_object_list (issue #9630)
are no more needed: remove them
* Don't define _Py_wstat() on Windows, Windows has its own _wstat() function
with a different API (the stat buffer has another type)
* Include windows.h
* _Py_fopen() and _Py_stat() come from Python/import.c
* (_Py)_wrealpath() comes from Python/sysmodule.c

* (_Py)_wstat(), (_Py)_wgetcwd(), _Py_wreadlink() come from Modules/getpath.c
Redecode the filenames of:
- all modules: __file__ and __path__ attributes
- all code objects: co_filename attribute
- sys.path
- sys.meta_path
- sys.executable
- sys.path_importer_cache (keys)
Keep weak references to all code objects until initfsencoding() is called, to
be able to redecode co_filename attribute of all code objects.
retry the select() loop instead of bailing out. This is because select()

namespace if it occurs as a free variable in a nested block. This limitation
of the compiler has been lifted, and a new opcode introduced (DELETE_DEREF).
This sample was valid in 2.6, but fails to compile in 3.x without this change::

This sample has always been invalid in Python, and now works::

There is no need to bump the PYC magic number: the new opcode is used

Call _wfopen() on Windows, or fopen() otherwise. Return the new file object on

http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/ThreadSanitizer is a dynamic data
race detector that runs on top of valgrind. With this patch, the binaries at
http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/ThreadSanitizer#Binaries pass many
but not all of the Python tests. All of regrtest still passes outside of tsan.
I've implemented part of the C1x atomic types so that we can explicitly mark
variables that are used across threads, and get defined behavior as compilers
advance.
I've added tsan's client header and implementation to the codebase in
dynamic_annotations.{h,c} (docs at
http://code.google.com/p/data-race-test/wiki/DynamicAnnotations).
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get helgrind and drd to give sensible
error messages, even when I use their client annotations, so I'm not supporting
them.
This fixes issue #8441: python.c is not included

patch you get a link error when building

Fix issue #1590864, multiple threads and fork() can cause deadlocks, by
acquiring the import lock around fork() calls. This prevents other threads
from having that lock while the fork happens, and is the recommended way of
dealing with such issues. There are two other locks we care about, the GIL
and the Thread Local Storage lock. The GIL is obviously held when calling
Python functions like os.fork(), and the TLS lock is explicitly reallocated
instead, while also deleting now-orphaned TLS data.
This only fixes calls to os.fork(), not extension modules or embedding
programs calling C's fork() directly. Solving that requires a new set of API
functions, and possibly a rewrite of the Python/thread_*.c mess. Add a
warning explaining the problem to the documentation in the mean time.
This also changes behaviour a little on AIX. Before, AIX (but only AIX) was
getting the import lock reallocated, seemingly to avoid this very same
problem. This is not the right approach, because the import lock is a
re-entrant one, and reallocating would do the wrong thing when forking while
holding the import lock.
Will backport to 2.6, minus the tiny AIX behaviour change.

Most uses of PyCode_Addr2Line

Forcing people to go through the code object makes them know more about the
guts of the interpreter than they should need.
The remaining uses of PyCode_Addr2Line seem to be getting the line from a
traceback (for example,
http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en#u_9_nDrchrw/pygame-1.7.1release/src/base.c&q=PyCode_Addr2Line),
which is replaced by the tb_lineno field. So we may be able to deprecate

Issue #6042:
lnotab-based tracing is very complicated and isn't documented very well. There
were at least 3 comment blocks purporting to document co_lnotab, and none did a
very good job. This patch unifies them into Objects/lnotab_notes.txt which
tries to completely capture the current state of affairs.
I also discovered that we've attached 2 layers of patches to the basic tracing
scheme. The first layer avoids jumping to instructions that don't start a line,
to avoid problems in if statements and while loops. The second layer
discovered that jumps backward do need to trace at instructions that don't
start a line, so it added extra lnotab entries for 'while' and 'for' loops, and
added a special case for backward jumps within the same line. I replaced these
patches by just treating forward and backward jumps differently.

problems for binary distributions of Python in situations
where the build machine has SSE2 but the target machine
does not.
Therefore, don't enable SSE2 instructions automatically on x86.
Addresses the float -> string conversion, using David Gay's code which
was added in Mark Dickinson's checkin r71663.
Also addresses these, which are intertwined with the short repr
changes:
- Issue #5772: format(1e100, '<') produces '1e+100', not '1.0e+100'
- Issue #5515: 'n' formatting with commas no longer works poorly
with leading zeros.
- PEP 378 Format Specifier for Thousands Separator: implemented
for floats.
- incorporate and adapt David Gay's dtoa and strtod
into the Python core
- on platforms where we can use Gay's code (almost
all!), repr(float) is based on the shortest
sequence of decimal digits that rounds correctly.
- add sys.float_repr_style attribute to indicate
whether we're using Gay's code or not
- add autoconf magic to detect and enable SSE2
instructions on x86/gcc
- slight change to repr and str: repr switches
to exponential notation at 1e16 instead of
1e17, str switches at 1e11 instead of 1e12
This is incomplete, but I want to get some version into the next alpha. I am still working on:
Documentation.
More tests.
Implement for floats.
In addition, there's an existing bug with 'n' formatting that carries forward to thousands grouping (issue 5515).

- new configure option --enable-big-digits
- new structseq sys.int_info giving information about the internal format
By default, 30-bit digits are enabled on 64-bit machines but
disabled on 32-bit machines.
This patch by Antoine Pitrou optimizes the bytecode for conditional branches by
merging the following "POP_TOP" instruction into the conditional jump. For
example, the list comprehension "[x for x in l if not x]" produced the
following bytecode:
1 0 BUILD_LIST 0
3 LOAD_FAST 0 (.0)
>> 6 FOR_ITER 23 (to 32)
9 STORE_FAST 1 (x)
12 LOAD_FAST 1 (x)
15 JUMP_IF_TRUE 10 (to 28)
18 POP_TOP
19 LOAD_FAST 1 (x)
22 LIST_APPEND 2
25 JUMP_ABSOLUTE 6
>> 28 POP_TOP
29 JUMP_ABSOLUTE 6
>> 32 RETURN_VALUE
but after the patch it produces the following bytecode:
1 0 BUILD_LIST 0
3 LOAD_FAST 0 (.0)
>> 6 FOR_ITER 18 (to 27)
9 STORE_FAST 1 (x)
12 LOAD_FAST 1 (x)
15 POP_JUMP_IF_TRUE 6
18 LOAD_FAST 1 (x)
21 LIST_APPEND 2
24 JUMP_ABSOLUTE 6
>> 27 RETURN_VALUE
Notice that not only the code is shorter, but the conditional jump
(POP_JUMP_IF_TRUE) jumps right to the start of the loop instead of going through
the JUMP_ABSOLUTE at the end. "continue" statements are helped
similarly.
Furthermore, the old jump opcodes (JUMP_IF_FALSE, JUMP_IF_TRUE) have been
replaced by two new opcodes:
- JUMP_IF_TRUE_OR_POP, which jumps if true and pops otherwise
- JUMP_IF_FALSE_OR_POP, which jumps if false and pops otherwise

issue #2937. This information can be helpful for diagnosing platform-
specific problems in math and cmath. The result of the test also
serves as a fairly reliable indicator of whether the x87 floating-point
instructions (as opposed to SSE2) are in use on Intel x86/x86_64 systems.

MacOS X: Enable 4-way universal builds
This patch adds a new configure argument on OSX:
--with-universal-archs=[32-bit|64-bit|all]
When used with the --enable-universalsdk option this controls which
CPU architectures are includes in the framework. The default is 32-bit,
meaning i386 and ppc. The most useful alternative is 'all', which includes
all 4 CPU architectures supported by MacOS X (i386, ppc, x86_64 and ppc64).
This includes limited support for the Carbon bindings in 64-bit mode as well,
limited because (a) I haven't done extensive testing and (b) a large portion
of the Carbon API's aren't available in 64-bit mode anyway.
I've also duplicated a feature of Apple's build of python: setting the
environment variable 'ARCHFLAGS' controls the '-arch' flags used for building
extensions using distutils.

Addresses issue 2802: 'n' formatting for integers.
Adds 'n' as a format specifier for integers, to mirror the same
specifier which is already available for floats. 'n' is the same as
'd', but inserts the current locale-specific thousands grouping.
I added this as a stringlib function, but it's only used by str type,
not unicode. This is because of an implementation detail in
unicode.format(), which does its own str->unicode conversion. But the
unicode version will be needed in 3.0, and it may be needed by other
code eventually in 2.6 (maybe decimal?), so I left it as a stringlib
implementation. As long as the unicode version isn't instantiated,
there's no overhead for this.

I finally got the time to update and merge Mark's and my trunk-math branch. The patch is collaborated work of Mark Dickinson and me. It was mostly done a few months ago. The patch fixes a lot of loose ends and edge cases related to operations with NaN, INF, very small values and complex math.
The patch also adds acosh, asinh, atanh, log1p and copysign to all platforms. Finally it fixes differences between platforms like different results or exceptions for edge cases. Have fun :)

Bug 1503: Get the test to pass on OSX. This should make the test more
reliable, but I'm not convinced it is the right solution. We need
to determine if this causes the test to hang on any platforms or do
other bad things.
Even if it gets the test to pass reliably, it might be that we want
to fix this in socket. The socket returned from accept() is different
on different platforms (inheriting attributes or not) and we might
want to ensure that the attributes (at least blocking) is the same
across all platforms.

Speed up test_dict by about 10x by only checking selected dict literal sizes,
instead of every integer from 0 to 400. Exhaustive testing wastes time without
providing enough more assurance that the code is correct.

Issue 2286: bump up the stack size of the 64-bit debug python_d.exe to 2100000. The default value of 200000 causes a stack overflow at 1965 iterations of r_object() in marshal.c, 35 iterations before the 2000 limit enforced by MAX_MARSHAL_STACK_DEPTH.

The behaviour of winsound.Beep() seems to differ between different versions of Windows when there's either:
a) no sound card entirely
b) legacy beep driver has been disabled
c) the legacy beep driver has been uninstalled
Sometimes RuntimeErrors are raised, sometimes they're not. If _have_soundcard() returns False, don't expect winsound.Beep() to raise a RuntimeError, as this clearly isn't the case, as demonstrated by the various Win32 XP buildbots.

Move abc._Abstract into object by adding a new flag Py_TPFLAGS_IS_ABSTRACT,
which forbids constructing types that have it set. The effect is to speed
./python.exe -m timeit -s 'import abc' -s 'class Foo(object): __metaclass__ = abc.ABCMeta' 'Foo()'
up from 2.5us to 0.201us. This fixes issue 1762.

Thread.start() used sleep(0.000001) to make sure it didn't return before the
new thread had started. At least on my MacBook Pro, that wound up sleeping for
a full 10ms (probably 1 jiffy). By using an Event instead, we can be absolutely
certain that the thread has started, and return more quickly (217us).
Before:
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread' 't = Thread(); t.start(); t.join()'
100 loops, best of 3: 10.3 msec per loop
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread; t = Thread()' 't.isAlive()'
1000000 loops, best of 3: 0.47 usec per loop
After:
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread' 't = Thread(); t.start(); t.join()'
1000 loops, best of 3: 217 usec per loop
$ ./python.exe -m timeit -s 'from threading import Thread; t = Thread()' 't.isAlive()'
1000000 loops, best of 3: 0.86 usec per loop
To be fair, the 10ms isn't CPU time, and other threads including the spawned
one get to run during it. There are also some slightly more complicated ways to
get back the .4us in isAlive() if we want.

formatting.
Includes:
- Modifying tests for basic types to use __format__ methods, instead
of builtin "format".
- Adding PyObject_Format.
- General str/unicode cleanup discovered when backporting to 2.6.
- Removing datetimemodule.c's time_format, since it was identical
to date_format.
The files in Objects/stringlib that implement PEP 3101 (stringdefs.h,
unicodedefs.h, formatter.h, string_format.h) are identical in trunk
and py3k. Any changes from here on should be made to trunk, and
changes will propogate to py3k).
